Default Obed Winterkilled

Sean went out to pre-fish it for us to head out next weekend and try for a giant Spring brown. Unfortunately, the lake looks to have mostly winterkilled this past hardwater season. He told me he did see a couple of fish, but also saw around 50 dead browns. Someone posted in the comments that they caught one today, so there are likely a few still in there. But they were so hard to catch previously, I can't see spending the time on that lake now for a few years. Really sad to hear...

That looks like a typical mortality situation and as the ice finishes off, all the floaters stuck in the ice from all winter come up to surface. A total winterkill usually has way more fish, of all age classes, washed up on shore.

Let's hope it's just that.

Alot of the dead ones will be lying on the bottom. The little guys usually hang on longer, and

What I did not see and what you would not expect to see is the perch that would have winter killed.

There will be some good out of this situation if it is a total winter kill and the perch have been removed by nature as well.

Obed really only has one deep channel of 30 foot water, so there is not alot of oxygen stored in the lake for a long winter.

Is this the bed lake off hwy 16 west, with the hill dropping down to the lake, where there is only 4 or 6 camp sites, and the boat launch

Thanks for the report. That is disappointing but as Drewski mentions good riddance to the perch.

Do to their size and ability to handle lower oxygen levels they are still around. Odds are a portion of the trout survived too
