Congrats on your first archery harvest. Beautiful doe. Be careful with that broadhead near your bowstring though.

Sept 2nd evening. Buddy set up about 75yds behind me and called him in from 300yds out. He was the only one out of 7 bulls that was interested enough to die. PLUG1

Was actually trying to get him a monster mulie but when you see 7 bulls it turns into a elk hunt fairly fast. He's getting half the meat and we will get that pig mule yet!

opening morning, 1/2hr before legal light. I was sitting up on a oat field edge getting a lay of the land and hoping to execute a stalk on some of the big bucks i know have been in the field frequently. turn around to find a very large set of antlers coming straight at me. He passed me at 12 yards. Hes much bigger then I thought and would guess hes in the mid to high 170's WT. well dam.

Hunting partner shot a nice 5x5 bull sat morning that was very vocal and with a few cows.

several opportunities on does w/ fawns. A young velvet 3x3 WT.
I have yet to see a hard antlered buck. velvet is coming off very late this year.

Congrats to all the successful hunters.

Although I haven't shot anything yet, I've been seeing anywhere from 5-14 moose a day. Here are a couple of nice bulls from the weekend. I've been seeing lots of all different sizes but only one in the 50" range, that guy got lucky opening morning. [IMG][/IMG]

I've heard that you should never shoot an animal during the full moon phase because the meat will be tough, my Dad said they never used to butcher during the full moon. Has anyone else heard this?

Default WT Buck Down

My buddy and I were in our treestands last evening overlooking the alfalfa field we've hunted with permission for several years. All was quiet when out of the trees comes a 9 point buck - nothing huge but for the area it's a good deer to see.

The buck walks about 15 yards from my buddy's stand but he get's no opportunity for the shot. It then makes a bee-line almost straight for my stand and comes through the trees emerging into my shooting lane at about 20 yards from my stand. Within a couple of seconds I release an arrow and "thwuunnnk" - the sweet sound of an arrow hitting the boiler room.

The buck kicked and took off like I've never seen before. He ran 70 yards down and back up a small stream bottom, cleared a fence with a slight brush on the top wire, and ran another 100 yards to the north end of a stand of trees in the middle of the field. Just as it looked like he was going to leave the property and head into a protected piece of land, he took a sharp right turn and ran another 200 or so yards before diving like a teen on a slip-and-slide. He slid at least 10 yards and was done in the middle of the field not more than 150 yards from my truck.

Having just switched from NAP Spitfire broadheads to Rage Hypodermics, I am slightly concerned that the deer travelled so far but I'll take the kill just the same. Upon field dressing we determined that the shot took out both lungs and the heart. It seems to me that deer drop must faster if the heart is not hit and it keeps pumping blood out of the lungs. Maybe just a tough deer.

Anyways - after only one morning and a couple of hours in the stand last evening, this is a great start to the season and I have some fine meat for the freezer.

Next - moose hunt in 2.5 weeks.

Good luck this season everyone.

Whitetails are tough man. My buck last year took 2 bullets through the lungs and still ran 100 yards into the tree line. Congrats on the buck.

Quiet like most of the Southern forest areas.... and nearby private land that has booted off all visitors.....

I won't be putting up any pictures until we get some moisture (and then I'll be lucky to put up a pic)

Nice pictures and stories so far though - keep them coming everyone as we are all living vicariously through your adventures

Did anyone find the heavy smoke on Saturday to keep everything out of the fields and off the hoof?

Hoping to throw up a pic on Thursday, whether it's a grouse or a moose will depend on how lucky I get on my first day out with the bow. Can't wait!

Zipped this bull on Thursday morning. Located with the bugle and moved in on him. Hit him with some hot cow calls. Had him on a rope he came so hard and fast buddy did not even have a chances to draw before the bull was 10 yards. Bull must have caught him moving bust back. Hit him with some cow calls again. He circled down the creek to grab are wind. When he went to cross back across a beaver dam let him have it at 30 yards as he was standing in the open on the dam. Shot was a bit forward but the arrow just missed the shoulder bone. Heard him fall dead in 10 seconds with in 60 yards. He is bust off at his eye guard on his right side.

While I'd like to take credit for that post Stinky, Cripler was the OP on that elk. And I agree on the old school bit too. Way to go Cripler!

Default Got'er done!

Ten days into my elk hunt and 4 days left to go finally connected with this guy. Started the trip off to a rocky start with a foot injury but we hunted hard. Elk and moose encounters everyday day for past two weeks but nothing came to fruition until last night. During our walk out of the woods we came across this nice moose. Did a 160 yard stalk and he was coming towards us for a fight. Buddy behind me with his bow above his head like a moose, and after ranging 3 times got to 40 yards. I took a risky shot, full frontal with my 465 grain FMJ tipped with Grim Reaper. Complete pass through and he died within 20 yards not even 30 seconds after shot. To top it off he died on the main trail. No tracking or humping meat out on my back. Drove the truck through the grazing lease right up to him. My first Archery moose and first kill with my bow. I must say I'm sold on the Grim reapers and my arrow setup now

Seen some photos of at least 4 giant bulls going down today. Hopefully a story and a few more pics come up. 1 more week before I leave, congrats to everyone so far!
