Default Need help with light spinning pack rods

I'll be guiding a family from Ohio in a couple of weeks, and they want to both fly fish and spin cast. I know less then nothing about light action spinning rods. I would think a 6' or 6'6" 3 piece (or more) would be what I would need (high mountain lakes)... Half decent light open face reel, as well.

Can anyone recommend a decent rod that won't break the bank (don't want to cheap out either).

I hear the TFO rods are decent, but only the 7' light/med rods come in a 3 piece...

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter

I've had an Eagle Claw Trailmaster 7' spin/fly for years. Good medium level rod. Still sold at Wholesale and Cabela's

Thanks for the info. I should clarify, not looking for a spin/fly combo. Dedicated spinning rod.

Thanks,

P

I have done well with the 4 pce 6'6" Ugly sticks. They get good distance and are still sensitive and also have a 5 year warranty. I teamed it up with a lower end Shimano reel and 20 lb braid. That will cast lighter lures or flies and a casting bobber and it has saved my day when there was wind or other issues with the fly rod. I have even used it south for surf fishing as it packs nice and is light weight. Just keep an eye on that the sections are secure, not usually a problem unless someone is really trying to cast a long way or yanking a lure loose off a snag.

I got a couple of those, and i paired mine up with pflueger reels, but whatever seems like the best value at the time. I have an ultra light, light and medium light in these rods. I also use a slip bobber with leech and chrionomids patterns for lakes and worms and nymph patterns in the river.

Take a look at shimano Exage rods, they come in multi piece or telescopic, very good rods for the money. Wss or bass pro, both have them just not sure what sizes.

Cabela's has a good selection of travel rods as well. St.Croix makes a travel one that's pretty good, and as mentioned above, the Shimano Exage which comes in telescopic and multi-pieces. If you can still find some, the Rapala Classic Trout travel rods are good value, too. Haven't seen them in Calgary for some time though. WSS has a few Daiwa and Fenwick options as well. Most are within the $100-$200 range. Fenwick Eagle is an economic option around $90.

My wife and I have have the Diawa ultralite spinning packs for well its gotta be 20 years now. They pack down into a hard plastic carry case about 18" ? long. Great little units, they have been used on hikes, pack trips, and smaller lake trips. Nice thing about the ultra lite is no matter what you hook, it feels like a salmon !

Fenwick Eagle GT 4 Piece 7' ML MF is the rod you want.

Fishinhole had them but I see on their website it says they are discontinued now(would be new within last couple weeks though).

Cabelas has them.

Wholesale too(on sale even).

Cabelas ice rod case works good for this rod so you can leave the reel on and also has pockets for lures, pliers and whatever else a guy needs.
