Default Grass seed... When to mow it?

I planted grass seed about 5 or 6 weeks ago, it is coming in nice. I am not sure if I should mow it this year or maybe let it go through the winter months. If I cut it, is it going to be stunted? Or will it come in better? I was just going to leave it. Any thoughts? Comments?

Thanks

Mow it when it reaches around 4" in height. Best to have the soil dry. Then water after mowing. Give it a treatment of fertilizer about 6 weeks after seeding. You still have lots of good "growing" season left. Almost all of September. In fact it's growing faster now than in the heat of summer.

I'd cut it high as your mower goes, just clip it for now and that will kill your annual weeds too if you have any. You'll have stronger roots for better grass later.

Alot depends on the variety of the grass.

Fescues and the like tend to develop a much stronger root base once mowed or grazed. I was once told that this is a natural defence of the plant, as it gets stronger and branches out when the plant is threatened.

Personnaly, my best lawn results seem to come from lots of mowing, and mowing early in the life cycle of the grass.

Just my 2 cents.

I would cut it at the highest setting on the lawn mower and fertilize with a fall fertilizer, low first number, low nitrogen, helps the roots grow. You will have the nicest grass in the spring. In late spring (mid june) give it a high nitrogen fertilizer, you will have the best grass around depending on the weeds you have of course. Any weeds should be pulled now, before you cut.
