Black Rainbow Trout?
Hey guys,
My buddy went out fishing today and caught a super dark rainbow. I've personally never seen anything like it, is this normal? Some kind of mutation?

That is neat, just looking around it sounds like this does happen every once in a while. Must be some sort of genetic thing.
There is actually a really neat picture of a half black trout on here which is cool.

Was it caught in a dugout or small pothole lake?

Its a fairly common color phase in some systems. I wouldn't call it rare by any accounts, but it may be in that river. I believe genetics as well as habitat (color of the surroundings) play a factor. I have seen way darker rainbows in streams with black substrates. Nice looking fish though!

If you trout fish the pothole lakes in AB you will see a lot of very dark trout. Don't know why but in the deeper, cleaner lakes in BC the trout are much more silver compared to ours.

You can find them in the Crow as well. They are mixed up on when to spawn...keying off photo period. Length of sunlight in the Spring versus the Fall becomes equal at certain dates.

Very ironic and coincidental that this thread popped up. I was up to Pickle Jar Lakes last evening and brought the fly rod with me. At lake two where we were camped, it was very shallow near the mouth upon where lake 2 drains into lake 1. There was one black cutty that sat in the trough the whole time. There were numerous fisherman including myself that tried to entice him/her to take a fly but to no avail. Definitely not a color you see every day.

Those yellow ones might be palomino rainbows.

If it came out of a lake it could be an egg bound trout. It's pretty skinny. Or it could be going into spawn. Did it have eggs in it? New eggs or old eggs? Some trout get mixed up as to when to spawn and some trout start going black at this time of year yet don't spawn till spring. Genetic mix up.
