I wouldn't worry too much about what Chuck is ranting about. Anyone who brings a picture of a rock he shot into the debate is "grasping".

I would say it may be possible to kill a deer with a .243 and an 85 gr. pill at ?500 yards?

Would I recomment a new hunter try such a shot? NO!
Would I try such a shot myself? NO!
Do I think it is responcible to talk about taking shots that are possible but should not be taken by the great majority of hunters? Probably not.

Now I feel bad, I shot lots of rocks and never took any pics, I once shot a trophy rock at 896 yds with a .223, broke it into 3 pieces which made it inelligable to enter in the Boone & Rockett records.

Default Hornady 105 gr. Amax in 243

Gentlemen...

The discussion has been lively and somewhat entertaining.. putting emotion aside, there have been some interesting and valid views put forward on all sides of the debate... To put all this into context, recall that I asked if anyone had experience with the Hornady 105 gr Amax as a hunting round for deer sized (+-) game... As of now, no one has responded to the question in the affirmative.

To further put my question in to context, I am not a beginner shooter or hunter. I have over 35 years of experience in both and have successfully hunted all Alberta games animals (sans grizzly) using a Ruger No 1 chambered in 270 Win. I have recently been gifted a Husqavarna Featherweight chambered in 243 Win. from an elderly friend and am trying to work up a load that is accurate and that can be used as a hunting round for the appropriate sized game and at appropriate distances.

Having said that, has anyone used the 105 Amax on deer sized game and if so, what was your experience?

And thanks to those who have provided valuable insight into the debate swirling around bullet choice!!

Best regards

Capthook

The 105 A-max is of the VLD (very low drag) design, hence its high ballistic coefficient, it is a very long bullet for its weight. Many 243 rifles with the standard 1-10 twist are right on the verge of to slow of a rotation and may not stabilize this bullet. Most guys using it employ it in rifles with either 1-9 or 1-8 twist barrels. You will have to try it in your rifle and see if it will fly straight for you.
