17Mach2 for small varmints,at half the cost of 17HMR.For longer ranges,or animals up to the size of coyotes, the 22Hornet is superior, and can be loaded for the price of 17HMR ammunition.

It depends on what animal you are hunting and the reason you are hunting it.
For instance, if you are hunting squirrels for hides, I would not recommend the .17, it tears them apart. Your hides would be worthless.
If you are hunting gophers to eliminate them from your pasture, I'd choose the .17. It has a lot more range and even many marginal hits would likely cause instant death.
I would respond to your survey if it wasn't so vague.

Between the two calibres given, I'd say the .17 hmr just on principle....it will outperform the .22 lr by a wide margin on anything. This is not to say that it is sufficient gun for everything, common sense needs to be exercised. Having said that, 20 gr hollowpoints applied to the heads of coyotes at 100 yrds or less are entirely adequate, and easily enough done with the tack driving accuracy inherent in the calibre. I personally wouldn't stretch it much past the 100 yrd mark, but know others who have successfully done so.

Kind of like comparing a Ferrari to a Lada. It really depends what you are after and what distances you want to shoot. I've got my 17HMR dialed in to 250 yards but it costs a lot more per bang.

Really depends for what, got a pasture of 100's of gophers? Then the 22lr is the way to go for cheap volume shooting. Shoot just a few times a year and want to make it count, well then the 17 is the ticket.

I prefer a 22, cheaper to use. Also you need to give us a hint what you want to hunt though
If your just getting into rifles I'd get a 22 first, way cheaper to practice with and more shooting equals more fun in my books

I'd have to say the 22. I've found that the game load ammo shots very well out of a 22-10. With open sites it's deadly to 50 yards.

first good thing I have heard about that shot, and I have never heard it being deadly to 50 yrds...
I shoot rabbits out to 200 yrds with the 17 HMR...
I love the .22, but for a little more accuracy and reach, I enjoy my 17 hmr

I always head out to the gopher patch with both. If i was only allowed one it would be the 22lr.

I'd go with a 22 mag all day lays a beaver out a lot better than a 17.

If I want to eat what I'm shooting I'd take the 22lr for grouse and rabbits.
If I'm shooting yotes or gophers I like the 17 hmr but for gophers the ammo gets expensive. 22 lr is the way to go on the cheap but the hits are not quite as dramatic.
My 10/22 is accurate out to at least 100 yds.

If I had to choose just one it is the 22 for sure. Cheap to shoot, quiet, ammo from 700 fps to 1600 fps is easily available, can easily be used to 200 yards with practice and a Mil-dot scope and for small game edible, much easier on meat.

I think that owning a .22LR and the likes of a .223 or .222 makes everything in between obsolete. Mostly because you can hunt gophers and sharpen your shooting skills with a .22LR most economically. The triple deuce and .223 can be good long range shooters with the knock down power to handle 'yotes and still be loaded down to 22 Hornet performance.
