Default Authorization to carry

Hi everyone, looking to get a question answered.

I'm going to start the paperwork to get an ATC to carry a dispatch pistol on the trapline.

My grandpa is adamant that once I do that, I can get an ATC to carry a large caliber for protection. Which is true but I don't own any large caliber pistols.

The CFO at the high level gun show is telling him there is still certain individuals that are permitted to do transfers/sell but won't give him specifics.

Does anyone know whether this is true or not and who can still transfer pistols?

Default Atc

Josh, I have had ATC for years, here are some facts.
1) You have to apply for each handgun as different POP forms.
2) Only able to carry one handgun at a time.
3) A person with ATC can still buy/sell/transfer handguns.
Be sure to justify why you need each handgun on the application forms, the CFO will try to discourage you by mentioning things like bear spray, rifle etc.

Furthermore re Handgun ATC Applications:

You should always apply on the basis that it is a work place safety issue. Stress that a long gun is a personal safety hazard to carry strapped to your shoulder through bush while having to carry traps, axe, etc.
Secondly stress that a long gun is impossible to leave stored on an ATV or snowmobile, in a container that does not identify it as a gun, as specified by law.

Is there a minimum or maximum caliber restriction they will allow? Ie is 9mm or .357 acceptable?

Let mine laps as I found it a pain in the butt. Have to renew annually. If on a motorized vehicle has to be in a locked box and have a trigger lock installed. Mine was for dispatch. Could carry pistol while checking traps, but when going from one piece of property to another had to put gun in locked box. As I’m a resident trapper and I’m constantly going from one piece of land to another found it wasn’t feasible.

I might add to my previous post that if the CFO suggest bear spray to you just agree that it probably works under ideal conditions , but under windy conditions lead bullets don't fail!

Thanks for the info Tomcat. I'm well versed in the challenges in getting one and rules surrounding them etc. My grandpa carries his while we're out there. Just trying to sort out who I can purchase from if the paperwork all goes through.

Not sure exactly what the rule of thumb is but I believe my Grandfather and his brother were told 9mm was not adequate enough. They both carry a 357.

I had an atc for my 40 S&W, the minimum may depend on who is approving the application. When I got mine the CFO recommended that a 357 would be the best choice for most people.

Yes 357 magnum is the minimum for protection. You need to renew your ATC every 2 years, they (Libs) make it as complicated as they can in Canada.

How is Todd standing allowed to act all crazy chasing Sasquatch, how the heck is he eligible, he’s obviously a little “out there”?

You can use an atc for dispatch or protection, you can also have up to two guns on your atc, so you could have a .22 and also something larger. I had 2 different guns I could carry, both for protection.
