How do you catch a whitefish?
Hey guys, I’m new to this forum site but have been on similar other sites.
I’ve been doing a bit of research on whitefish fishing, while its fairly common with net fishing has anyone on here tried it with a hook in winter, spring or summer?
Specifically looking up towards Lac La Biche lake and the lakes in that area.
How do you catch them when they’re jumping for flies in the spring without a fly rod? Spinners?
How deep in the winter, and what to use?
Hope someone can share luck they've had.

I usually see them jump for about a two week period, just never thought of trying to catch them till now.

Depends on the water body, In Gull lake i fish in 12 fow or less, same for pigeon, but yet in LOTW i fish 30-40 feet, and lures vary as well, in Alberta I use wireworms etc in various colors as per water body Im on, were in LOTW i use 1 oz jigging spoons tipped with small minnows, or tube jigs with no bait.

most catch them in winter using wire worms, wetaskewins, small jigs, things like that, you usually will want a shack as a lot of it requires sight as they usually bite very lightly and quickly unless it is the spawn. In open water the setup that I have the most luck with was a wire worm, 3 feet of 4 pound line, then a swivel and above just enough split shot to slowly sink the hook and allow you to cast a little further and sink it slowly.

Marie lake off the primrose highway is full of 2-5 lb fish. Fishin shallow water 3-5 ft deep by the boat launch , you can see them and they are very aggressive . I use small jigs tipped with power bait.
