I always found them to be a PITA to tie as well. The problem is they work so well for a variety of lakes and rivers so well worth the pain. If you go to Phil Rowley's web site flycraftangling.com and look for his fly archive you will find a very good step by step instruction for his version of a Humpy. I have found it to be the best I've come across and it also covers proportioning which is important. After that, practice makes perfect. Have fun. Rick.

I find you need the best elk hair you can find, not to much underfur on it and nice and pliable. Its probably my favorite fly to use but time consuming to tie. Practise helps. Jack Dennis is your best book imo.
