I have 2 power augers.
Usually drain the tank and run the auger until it's out of gas.

I do just the opposite, leave some gas in it and add a small amount of fuel stabilizer.

I also stand it up, used to take the auger off but not anymore. done it this way for 3 winters never a problem.

I just hang it up and charge the batteries every couple of months another added benefit lol.

I would keep the tank full, fuel stabilizer, pull the plug and spray de-fogger in there, put the plug back and pull the cord a few times and hang it up till next winter. if you drain all the fuel thats when you have problems of everything gumming up. once a year put a spurt 1/2 ounce of sea foam in your tank start of the season

Start it and warm it up every month or so, so that no corrosion develops in the cylinder or crankcase and the diaphragms don't dry up. You'll never have a problem again.

I recommend a little of both...

put some stabilizer in the fuel.... let it run so some gets thru
all the parts of the Carb.
Drain out the fuel and restart the Auger and let it run dry.

Fuel is not a lubricant so there is no value in leaving it in the carb
over the summer months. When fuel evaporates it will leave a varnish
on the internal components of the Carb. So.... a bit of stabilizer in the
fuel run thru the carb should prevent any residue/vanish from forming.
And... running it dry will prevent any left over residue when the the
fuel would normally evaporate during the summer months.
