So how will all this snow affect the ice

Not sure the exact number, but we have to had close to 2 feet of snow here in the last couple days. How will that affect the six inches of ice that have on the lakes?

Fair bit of weight on 6 inches of ice..... Gonna weigh the ice down, forcing water up through the sides and cracks causing slush on top.

Its going to insulate the ice underneath the snow and slow down the thickening process but at the same time insulating it from any warm days we have to being in Alberta. It will also stop light from entering speeding up the plants dying off and bringing a possible winterkill earlier on the small lakes like chickakoo for eg.

I agree. Just like last year on some lakes, it was brutal.

is it not recommended to go on the ice after the snow we got ?

1. Snow insulates. Ice freezes slower

2. Snow is heavy and weighs the ice down. When the ice cracks water can rush to the surface and equalize the surface loading. If you find slush under deep snow beware. We had 10 inches of ice on lake sundance. Withing 24 hours of cracking we had a hole in the ice 20 foot by 20 foot.

3. Snow covers thin ice. Can trick someone into thinking ice thickness is uniform,

4. Snow covers rotting ice.
