1. Snow insulates. Ice freezes slower
2. Snow is heavy and weighs the ice down. When the ice cracks water can rush to the surface and equalize the surface loading. If you find slush under deep snow beware. We had 10 inches of ice on lake sundance. Withing 24 hours of cracking we had a hole in the ice 20 foot by 20 foot.
3. Snow covers thin ice. Can trick someone into thinking ice thickness is uniform,
4. Snow covers rotting ice.
