Default Thoughts on Mossberg pump

Looking around for a youth size Shotgun. Seems a lot of the new ones on the shelf these days are not the same quality that they used to be. (ie remmington - yeah, I said it!) Any mossberg comments. Their mini verssion looks about right, providing it's not a total P-O-S.

Default I like the tang safety on the mosbergs

I can't speak for the quality of the new ones though.
I still think the 870's are hard to beat for an all-round relaible shot gun

Im really wanting to buy a Mossberg UltiMag 835 in max4.... really liking them over the Benelli Novas , they just fit me so well.

Got to use a friends Mossberg 500 pump in .410 yesterday... fit super nice and functioned great.. definately want to pick up one of those as well.

I own Mossberg tactical shotguns and love them all... function great and dont let me down

I have a Mossberg 500 in 12 ga...fits me well, and have never had an issue with it (3 years).

I bought an 835 camo waterfowl edition with 3.5 chamber and my friend bought one with me the same day and we both have had nothing but trouble with them from day one. The mossberg sticker on the stock when I peeled it off took the camo finish off with it and both guns have had nothing but trouble with jamming and ejecting shells out the bottom. I sold mine after and bought a Benelli Nova which I love. But I have to say I have owned some Mossberg 500 models and I have nothing bad to say about them. They fit me and functioned great and I will actually be buying a Mossberg 500 20 gauge next week but I will never buy another 835.

I've got a model 500 12 gauge.

I bought it new in about 1980, I think.

It has served me well, paid for itself a couple of times. That being said, it has it's issues. The barrel bulged a bit due to hot loads some years ago.
It messed up the pattern some but otherwise it works okay to this day.

It's not the quality of a Remington 870 or a Winchester model 2200 but it will do the job for a good number of years.

Thanks for the input. I'd pretty much decided to let the kid use my 20 for the limited shooting he's likely to get, but now I see WSS is offering all of their guns 10% off this week. Might have to take another look.

I have the same one, and it has outperformed the Remington 870 at clay shoots, with a 20in barrel!

I also have a Mossberg 935 autoloader, love it too. It does have a tendancy to jam up when it's hot. I clean it after each use, but it still jams up.

The 500 pump -NEVER- has jammed on me.

The gun store I got to said nothing special about Mossbergs. He advised me to steer clear of them and the Remington 870. He refuses to sell garbage to his customers is what he said. I bought a Benelli Nova Pump 12 guage.
