Default "Hung like a Trout 2013"

"Hung like a Trout!!!!"

is what became the slogan for this last weekend and what the group of us chanted for three days at the 2nd Annual Cold Lake over nighter trip!

So a little history for everyone.. Last year around this time Willowtrail, Champion, and Viral Overide headed out on a Cold Lake over nighter trip (http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/showthread.php?t=125856). They slept through 50km winds and Champion and Viral each got to land their first lakers. This year they decided to take it to another level and got 9 more of us out with custom made shirts done up (kudos to Viral Overide).

On Friday morning, the three of them headed to Cold Lake with new additions Ang, Appleja, Mike, Fort Fisherman, Rumtan, and Hidar. Centerpin and I rolled onto the lake around 11:00pm and thank god for the ice roads out there or it would have been a nightmare trying to find them in the pitch black darkness!! We eventually made it and set up for a night of fishing.

(Oh!! If someone wants to fill in a fishing report for Friday then go right ahead.. the only report I got was how many fishing holes Willowtrail had stepped in once it got dark and then the obvious frozen burbot that I was getting chased and poked with lol.)

Saturday morning couldn't come fast enough I was so cold in my sleeping bag lol!! It was my first night sleeping in a tent on a cot placed in the middle of a lake but I wasn't too surprised of the cold. I was more disappointed my rod was still sitting in the same position I had left it lol. When I walked out from my tent everyone was still sleeping.. or at least hiding in there tents so me and FF did a timmies run and came back to breakfast being cooked!

Champion was the first to land a Lake Trout on this day.

Chevy enjoying my bed in the sun.

The rest of the day was pretty slow fishing but we had a blast regardless. Appleja took off on his sled for a few hours and came back with fish stories and pictures :P while the rest of us fished around camp in anywhere between 60 to 110 fow.

When the fishing got really slow we turned a flooded tent...

Into a slip and slide!!

By the evening Appleja landed a nice laker.

And soon after Willowtrail landed another at 9lbs.
s

I still had a skunk following me around all day but I think Fort Fisherman probably had the worst luck of all dropping more things down his hole then pulling things out haha :P..

That night was not nearly as cold as the first night and I think I managed to get a little more sleep despite day light saving. I was just barely waking up when I hear yelling coming from the FatFish over.
Willowtrail was fighting another Lake Trout and landed the biggest fish of the trip at 11lbs!!!!!!!

After the sun started to come up AJ used his finesse filleting skills and we all enjoyed a delicious afternoon fish fry.

I headed out soon after while Willowtrail and AJ stuck it out for one more night. Willowtrail sent me this picture last night but I'm still waiting to hear the full report!

And last but not least I wanted to thank you guys for the invite!!! The weekend was amazing and I'm still wearing a smile!! I've always wanted to sleep on the ice so I jumped all over this opportunity and even though I didnt take home a fish I took home this amazing memory!!

"Hung like a Trout 2013 Cold Lake Alberta!!!"

3 nights, 6 trout, 2 burbot. 28" kept, 26" released 4 undersize. What an awesome weekend. Last trip 6 weeks ago was -40 so this one was a breeze! Can't wait to do it again next year!

After 4 days on the water, I figured it was necessary! Got "high centered" to buy a couple more hours on the ice this morning

My toe caught the tent door, it was dark, um, i blinked when i shouldn't have.

Oh wait, who caught the biggest laker, oh ya, me. Lol.

Applejax and i both stepped in one today packing up as well. I love my muck boots and frabil pants. Almost knee deep and dry.

Site was left clean like when we got there.

Only brought home 5 - 20lb propane bottles, 3 tents and more.

Did I mention I caught an 11 lb 6 oz laker? Oh, I did? Ok

What a great trip with great people.

What's next years guess? 20 people?

Fishergrrl

Great thread, looks like a fantastic time was had by all.

If you have this kind of fun on hard water, I cant imagine the level of laughter when you get out to the Lodge this summer.

All you crazy ice guys should try and make that trip. It promises to be another memorable experiance for all.

Jamie
