n 2021, the Alberta government collected $7.3 million in royalties from coal (this does not include freehold production of coal). Royalties vary annually depending on the coal price. In the last five years, royalties have ranged between $7 million and $23 million per year.
As I said, coal prices must have come way up. Works the same as O&G royalties it seems

Numbers please
Grade of coal and accessibility would be nice too as it makes a huge difference on market comparison. Also how many years the leases operated would be nice
A coal mine is not just a coal mine

Is Alberta not exporting much coal or are they giving it away?
You know what they pay here in Aus?
My state is only a little larger population then Alberta and here’s last year
That’s straight up royalties and doesn’t include the thousands of high paying jobs, taxes, economic stimulation etc.

Yay?
Did you add up Alberta's royalties?

No, you’re the one throwing numbers around. They seem low so that’s why I asked “why no money for old ‘Berta?” Not exporting enough to talk about or are they giving it away? The devil is always in the details.
Nobody is getting out of bed for a few million a year in royalties.

If the UPC ever approve this project at least we will have a big hole to bury them in after the next election!

It was the NDP who approved the initial drilling permits for exploration of the sites a few years ago.
They also were the ones putting in place the shut down of public access to land in the area.
If you look at where some of the logging was approved along the forestry trunk road west of Rocky, they were going to leave a narrow strip of trees along the view point. Then mining operations were going to behind the small scenic view.
How sneaky of them.

Environmental wacko crowd is against every business you can think of. If I wanted to open a campground I know it would be almost impossible in my area because I know someone who for years tried to do it and environment was one of the excuses to stop him.
We need industry but we dont need thousands of new people moving here to fill the jobs that a new mine would provide.
If people keep moving here we are going to be like southern Ontario.

I'd still like to see a mine on corkscrew like has been the talk for a long time as would a majority of the locals I suspect. Good for the economy and might even be big sheep living there in a few years when the operating company starts the reclamation (not sure why you believe it would be the taxpayers)

may as well wait and see if they can obtain a water permit before getting to excited, but i'm for jobs and economic prosperity, and it was an operating mine site, easy enough to check for selenium below the existing mine, i would think?

New report states reclamation costs of the current Teck mine in Elk Valley could be $6.4 billion, for the selenium portion alone. Teck has set aside $1.9 billion. By the time they actually get to it, costs will have risen.
Oh, and Teck is selling itself to Glenncore, a foreign company. Stop Grassy Mountain before we wish we had.
