Unless there is a safety concern that the base decides to introduce changes to the number of hunters accessing the lands, it will look just like this year's hunt.

The harvest goal is 2050 elk per year for 2015 and 2016.
With 1400 antlerless and 700 antlered licences issued, the harvest goal will only be reached with the additional kills from unlicenced hunting.

If these goals are achieved, the herd will then be close to the desired number and harvests rates will be reduced to a maintenance level of around 750 per year.

At this point, there will be a need to limit the harvest from the current rate. Licence hunters will be controlled through the licensing system. Unlicensed hunters could be managed through limited invites (perfectly legal) or through shortening the access dates.

BTW Joe, in Alberta, NO ONE may hunt at night and NO ONE may discharge a firearm at night other than at registered ranges or by peace officers in the course of their duties.

Thanks Rednuk, licence numbers edited on your note. Even with 2100 licences, there will not be a 100% success rate for these hunters.
The proposed hunt was for six seasons, but the base was able to fit in one more season within their schedule.
Remember that the desire is to get this herd cut in half asap. If harvest goals are exceed this year, it will be considered a success.

There are 7 of each season according to the draw book, so 700 antlered and 1400 which brings it to 2100, plus the additional kills. They will be above 2050 if that's the goal

That's a trophy hunting native right there. I had seen him bragging about getting the big bulls, on Instagram...it's guys like that a lot of us hunters have an issue with.

Yes...pleeeez, I would also love to see some pictures and maybe alittle written story to go along with them!
So...is that to much to ask of our fellow outdoorspeople??

Unfortunate as it may seem the elk indeed have seen the grass(corn, alfalfa, sunflower) is greener on the other side.
Yes, but the big ranchers that are opening the doors to FN hunters are leasing crown land? Should they really have the right to authorize game management on govt. land? They basically get the land to lease for free, plus they get the oil and gas revenue? I struggle with them being able to control the hunting on that land. Just my opinion

Never was this going to be a hunt of a lifetime, unless driving around the base until you see the animal you want, get out of truck and shoot is the hunt of a lifetime.
If you don't consider getting an opportunity at a 400 class elk an opportunity of a lifetime, you know very little about elk hunting in alberta. I have taken many elk in this province, and you will not find an elk of this calibre anywhere else. If it is not a hunt of a lifetime, why is everyone in the province applying for the hunt? Trust me 99% of the folks going to suffield feel it is, that's why they've built up their priority to a 12 or 14, also. because they've tried to get one elsewhere in this province and I don't need to ask them how that went.

Maybe take a look at Andreiz' thread and Spy2's threads on their hunts, not all of it is bad.

It is not as bad as some of the story's. You can get away from the crowds and have an enjoyable hunt. There is over 2000 square miles to hunt. My dad had a cow draw we were the only people around when he shot his cows. There were plenty of decent Bulls in the group. When he drove home he saw a huge herd of Bulls with many in the 330-375 range bedded inside the base.

We had a great hunt. My buddy had the cow draw for the first week. We missed the first day (Wednesday) due to work but drove into the base after Thursdays briefing and found a herd right way. We had the herd all to our self. He was able to harvest a big cow. By the time we had it loaded up we had yet to hear another shot in the immediate area meaning that herd went untouched. We never did find them again but later in the day we found another big herd. Again we were able to sneak to within range and my buddy had another big cow down. Throughout the whole day, we only seen 3 other trucks. My best suggestion, especially for your wife's cow hunt, would be to just wait out the opening day rush. The base is huge and there are a lot of elk there. I will be back to help my nephew and brother with there Bull tags and my son and a bunch of my buddies from work with cow tags. It is not a traditional hunt but the meat is great. I hope you change your mind, Good luck!!!!

The first Monday of the bull hunt was very frustrating.
Once the FN shot the Bulls they were after the party/gang hunting stopped.
The next two days was pretty good and I would encourage you to go, adjust your trophy expectations.
It's a big base and CFB has got the organization down pat now.
I'm going back as a helper on the next bull hunt as a good friend drew a tag.

If someone what's to send me a email address ill send them a couple they can post. They are off my phone I don't know how to post pics from it. They aren't letting people take pics on the base might have something to do with the lack of pics.

Thanks Elk, the one on the left is with Marco at Sugar Creek, were hoping he puts a tape on it. The one in the back of the truck is the middle one in the other pics. Its going on a plaque and will be score as well. That one is mine, it's heavy but has weak thirds. the main bases are 50".

Sorry to high jack the thread BUT....You must have been on a different CFB Suffield than I was Almer. Day two was a bigger sh*t show than day one was! What part of organization are you talking about, briefing? After the Indians drove through (cross country) the herd we were stalking I called Sgt. Simpson and left him a message. He called me back and apologized saying that they only had so many resources and it's a big track of land. Well it will only be a matter of time until someone gets shot. It's not a good feeling when you hear the ricochet before you hear the report of a rifle. AND yes I saw some white trash that put on a disgusting show also. If anyone is thinking about putting in for this next year give your head a shake! That is unless CFB Suffield makes some major changes. Oh and why isn't Elk on the menu of CFB Suffield. Could save the tax payers some money

Again , real happy for ya'all. You waited with years of priority and all came home with 6's.. No one was injured and you used your patience in line ..
To bad they wont allow pics on the base ? just cant get my head around the security part of that , just more rolling hills and rangeland , yet you can look it up real close on Google Earth.
If we tag out the end of January we will share our pics as well..

Cheers
