257 wby loads
just got myself another new to me wby from a great member of this forum ,
this time in a 257 mark V , 26 inch barrel accumark , little heavy compared to my 300 wby , whats a couple extra pounds when most times i'll be sitting in a stand anyway or on a cutline
so i'm thinking of going with 100 grain barnes TSX .BT or the great noslers partitions , this will be used 90% time for whitetails, other 10% will be maybe sheep and smaller , and the odd dog i see while out hunting
anyone care to share for your best loads , what do you use thats shoots fine ,
i'd sooner have tight groups over speed anyday , but speed is nice
hoping this will save me some time and save me some money on buying what powder and bullets to start
thanks

Barnes TTSX 100gn/75.5gn H1000 which is published max in the Barnes manual and Sierra prohunters 117gn/65gn H4831 which again is pretty much bang on what the manufacturers suggest, although I'm seating the sierras a bit deeper than the book.

im burning IMR 4831 and 100gr ttsx.=3650fps. but 4831 is probly too 'fast' of a powder. and im satisfied with the results on game, so far.not so much on paper.
having a super hot velocity with cloverleaf accuracy is the (relatively) unattainable holy grail of gunsports, so you might have to change what acceptable accuracy is to you and your conditions. it is, after all, a hunting caliber not a range machine.
IMO, another powder that should work is the IMR 7828 family. surfing the net will find that any of the slower powders are suitable as long as case capacity supports the volume
i only use 100 gr bullets max, using heavier bullets slows the round considerably and in my opinion there are better caliber selections available when your into the 120gr weights. (like the 270wby)
the whole cartridges design premise is speed, and when it connects...wow.

.257 Wby.Mag.
I'm using 72 grains of H1000 with a 110 Nosler Accubond in a Nosler case with Federal 215 Match primers. OL is 3.170. Unfortunately, this rifle didn't get to go hunting this year! My rifle is a Vanguard 2 Stainless!

3650 , I"d be more then happy with that speed ,
Can one get a great solid killing bullet in 90 grain for deer size animals , I see you can get nosler ballistic tips , I just think anything close , under a 100 yards or anything over 3400 speed will blow apart

Hornady GMX
I range tested the 90 grain GMX with RL22 and they shot quite well in my rifle! B.C. isn't that great though!

Hornady GMX 90 grain vs. 110 Interbonds
Just compare the energy tables between the 110 Interbond and the 90 GMX in the Hornady factory loads. Which would you choose? Interbonds for me!

I have a Rem 700 LSS in 257 Wby, I tried all sorts of combinations, from 100grs-117 grs and all types of brands. I found good loads with everything I tried, but I wanted something that was good and tight. I settled on 100gr TTSX and 70.5gr of Reloader 22. Its just over 3500fps on the chrony, and I shot a 3"group at 810 yards this summer with it.

69gr h1000, 115 bergers, tightest groups i've ever shot out of any rifle. i also had great luck with 70gr 0f imr7828 and 110 accubonds(hot in my rifle so work up). Have fun, it's a fun caliber.

thanks everyone for the loads , think my first go will be with barnes 100 TTSX , if i can find them in 90 grains then i'd go with them , but today at wholesale they didn't have much in stock for anything any good in 90 grains
so also today i gave it a good bore cleaning , it was pretty well cleaned with no copper built up , he said it had about 20 to 40 shots through it
i did a test with a slip of paper sliding it down under the barrel to see if it touched anywhere, '' it did '' ,
i thought these Wby accumarks were made with free floating barrel , must be a pressure point near the end of stock
am i wrong , should it be a full free floating barrel , if so i can just take a dremel and remove some of the stock where it's touching
also mounted my scope today , i put on the matte black leupold med high rings and bases ,
scopes on and i'm all now ,
VX III in 4.5 to 14 with the B & C retic , i'm sure liking this outfit , hope it's a good shooter like all these posts , i'll play with my brass lots , make em as close as i can to each other , i think that helps in a good load

what's a guy willing to pay for 257 wby brass?
I can get brand new unfired authentic norma(wby) brass for just under 40$/20 shells.
can i buy this, throw it through the tumbler to shine like crazy, and make a little money or dont waste my time?
CANT WAIT to get me a .257 wby.

I had the best luck with my rifle using H-1000, and IMR7828, and 100 gr bullets. Velocity was 3550fps out of the factory barrel, with 1 -1.25 moa groups. When I had a better barrel installed with less freebore, the groups were sub 1/2 moa, with about 50fps less velocity. I took deer, pronghorn, a mountain goat, and an elk with my 257WBY.

Just go to Cabela's and buy Weatherby factory ammo with 100 gr bullets. I'm guessing they are Hornady bullets. It's $40/box of 20. I bought 5 boxes and will get more.
Shoot it up and there's your brass.

thanks for all the loads ,
at last i got the bullets i wanted to start and try out first , got them 80 grain barnes TTSX , should shoot flat enough for whitetails and the odd wild dog ,
checked barnes book vol 4 for a load with no luck
so i called barnes to get a load as nothing in the book on them new 80 grains ,
the guy on the phone said the best load for speed and best tight group was with 7828 , speed was just a tad over 3800
in the rifle they used , only 24 inch barrel , mine is 26 yet i'm still going to try that powder as seems allot of guys like it
215M primers , i think i'll make them as long as i can , less free bore , as long as they fit in the mag , thats a start ,
i really want to make this puppy shoot , i took sandpaper and free floated the barrel where it was touching at the front , so she's good and clear now down to about 2 inches in front action ,
i like the stock , but it might need to be glass bedded around the pillers ,
anyone got any opinions that might make it shoot better

Look at using 100 Nosler with Reloader 22 or 85 Grain GS custom loaded hot.

I shoot 100 gr TTSX out of mine. I don't like them. Sure they kill animals but the results I saw with the bullet I didn't like. I had deer and coyotes running a 100 yards or more before tipping over and no blood trails. Also if you hit guts you won't knock them over or hit them hard enough to slow them down. I didn't like the way they worked and will try an accubond to see if it helps any. I shoot TTSX in my 7STW as well but with better results. Maybe because the bigger bullets? My 2 cents

You said you sanded out the pressure point. If you don't get the accuracy you want after your load development, try replacing the PP. Don't ask how much time/$$$ it took to find this out.

This is true, the accumark stock has a pp close to the front swivel stud that's supposed to be there.

i'v always found ''most'' , not always but most rifles shoot better with a free floating barrel ,
this 257 wby has the big barrel compared to my 300 wby in ultra light , i left my 300 with the pressure point , happy with it
just thinking that this 257 will be better off with a full free floating barrel as it has the bigger barrel and its fluted to boot , plus i also think it helps lots when you hand load for it , i will know soon enough , easy to add in a good new pressure point , better then what they did
