Default Exotic Ranch Hunt (The conclusion with pictures)

Hey guys
So with a short open window of timing I got something put together for the little man. The price was decent and they had what I was looking for.
The bush is extremely thick, and the boy was picky about the kind of ram he wanted to kill so it ended up taking us 2 days to get it done. After the ram we chased around these Turkeys we saw a few times while hunting the rams so we added one of those to the package.

Now honestly, I wouldn’t do this hunt for myself. That being said for a young hunter it was a pile of fun. He ended up killing the ram in a small gully at 76 yards which is almost the farthest you could shoot on the whole place. There was a good number of ewes with the rams and if the wind wasn’t right and they spotted you the jig was up.

All in all it was pretty fun and awesome watching the boy put down his first “big game” animal and turkey with 1 shot each.

On another note I’ve spoken to F&W about hunting the bison outside of the park in Northern Alberta and it seems since they aren’t a game animal, there is no age restriction on who can shoot one of them. Looks like there’s going to be an 8 year old chasing bison this winter 👍

Great job, you took some abuse for asking but look at the kids smile. I bet dad was smiling just as much. Being the son of an outfitter will guarantee him some wicked "fair chase" opportunities and trophies in the future but he will never forget the time dad took him for the first two.

Congrats kid(and dad)

Thanks 35 !

He likes the ear muffs while we’re out hunting, and I wear them while shooting as well but prefer ear plugs when I’m hunting.
I stood on a rig for too many years listening to a Diesel engine screaming, I try to make sure I save what’s left these days.

Good show. I was thinking sheep would be a good idea. Nice!
I thought I heard the northern bison WMU's were closed to hunters this winter for bison? Something about Covid? I could be dead wrong there.

Just a euro mount for the sheep. Now he wants to get a few different ones so I said we’d euro them and he could keep them in his room. For the price of a shoulder mount it pays for 1 1/2 more sheep too so it was an easy decision for him lol

Thanks Wildwoods

I’m not sure how they would close a WMU for an animal classified as a non native species you don’t need a license to hunt. Those zones are all open right now for moose hunters, don’t think they’ll lock them up after November.

He had a blast.

I made a deal with the owner to rent the place so we could hunt on our own. I didn’t really require a guide lol
That’s not what they usually do though, they usual guide the hunters themselves. I was cheap, couple grand for the ram and turkey.

Looks like a perfect way to introduce a young fellow to hunting.

The Bison hunt maybe not so much.

I know a number of people who have tried that hunt, with only a a few successes.

For one, they are only huntable outside the park. Which is only possible after the swamps freeze over and there is snow on the ground, often a lot of snow.

Another issue I know about is that one has only a very narrow window of opportunity.

The closest area where they can be found is very wet and next to impossible to traverse before freeze-up. Once the swamps freeze they head back into the park for the winter.

Another thing to consider is the area is prone to property crime. You take a huge risk leaving anything unattended for more then a few hours.

The last issue I know of is that many are infected with tuberculosis.

Another issue is they are massive animals. way bigger then any Moose. field dressing and packing out requires a big commitment and some serious manpower. And you may discover your animal is one of the infected ones after all the work is done.

I'm sure there are other issues I wasn't told about.

My foster brother and a couple of close friends are among those who have hunted them.

But I suspect you know all that, so good luck, go get em.

I believe the park is closed to visitors but the hunt would be outside the park so no different then a Moose hunt except for no season, no tag, no license and no limits.
