How much lead time before it expires should you renew your PAL?
Thanks

At least a couple of months.
Last year I sent my renewal in four months before expiry...had it in my hands within three weeks.
But lots of horror stories of it taking 2-3 months.
You truly are at the mercy of the gods.

Mine expired in June, I did the online renewal in March and received my RPAL around the beginning of May, of couse early Covid days so things were handled sporatically at best. Good luck!

I always apply for renewal six months in advance, as I have had my new PAL in 3 weeks, and I have waited 5-1/2 months. And covid won't speed things up.

This!
6 months and I send off my application. If you have to answer yes to any of the questions it greatly slows your application process. Simply saying I had lost my job withing the last 6 months added a months delay to my application. If you answer yes then they hold your application, snail mail you a letter stating you need to call them to answer some questions before they will proceed. In my case they wanted to verify I wasn't suicidal because I got laid off ( like I would have even bother to re-apply if I was).

I know one guy that had to wait 14 months to get his Rpal renewed due to a technical glitch. He also sent it in 6 months before expiry.

As others have said, 6 months would be a good lead time. Renewing online seems to be much faster, last time I had my new card within a couple weeks. Also did it all on my phone as well.

Default Pal

I was going to be away, so I applied early.
We went away for 3 months of camping and hunting.
I ended up checking with the RCMP to follow up.
They checked and it was in the mail.....like the cheque!
It was in Canada Posts hands for 69 days.

Me also. I phoned after 3 weeks and they wanted proof of gun club membership, once I got that to them via e-mail I received it within a couple of weeks. On line is the way to go for sure even if you need to recruit a youngster to guide you through cyberspace.

I just renewed min it was expiring in April. I did the online form and my wife do her portion on Oct 24 and to my surprise it arrived 12 days later.
I was stunned to say the least, I had heard of a printer issue and with Covid I was concerned if it would arrive in time.

Just submitted my application online. We will see how long it takes. What a breeze though. Took a whole lot of 3 minutes or so (I took a selfie a month ago but never went further than that).

I saw that they extended all expiring PALs for six months due to COVID.

https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/firear...sease-covid-19

Quote:

Firearm licence expiry
As per the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act, since October 2017, individuals have a six-month extension period past the expiry date printed on their firearms licence card to submit a renewal application online
An expiring firearms licence card will automatically remain valid, with limitations, during this extension period

What does this mean for you?
Any firearms licence expiring between September 23, 2020 and December 30, 2020 will automatically be extended to December 31, 2020

I did mine online, about a month before it expired, and I had it in my hands in 10 days. They are FAST when you do it online, it seems, especially if you have no standout issues (ex-wife issues, etc).

I just did mine online yesterday. I wish they had the option to upload documents, specifically proof of my shooting club membership, as I'm expecting a letter from the RCMP with this request to come snail-mail along with the declaration for "target shooter or collector". Just another delay, but granted, last time I did this online it was pretty quick.

If its a new one it could take a long time. It also depends on how you answer the questions and the type of PAL you are requesting. Given today's current situation and no problems, I would expect 8-10 months? There was also an issue with the printers so who knows if that was actually resolved. If they called your reference and are awaiting a call back then it could be forever.

If its a renewal I know one person that waited 14 months for an Rpal.

I applied online for my renewal on Nov 3. They approved it Nov 9. Had my new card in my hands Nov 12.

Interestingly enough, two days after I submitted my renewal application, they sent a letter saying my card would be expiring. It was 3 months before expiry.
They also stated in that letter the fee would be increasing every year March 31.

When I phoned in to ask about when to renew, the gal recommended any time I want the year prior to renewal.

I got mine in one week. Crazy how fast it came. Did online like others mentioned. Just a non restricted.
Why do you have to carry the special conditions paper when I have no special conditions?

Saw this thread and remembered that I submitted a renewal application. Checked the status now:

I also have not checked the mail for a few days, so maybe it is already in the box. Nice and fast. I have RPAL (don’t currently own any restricted firearms though) and submitted on November 21.

Don’t do as I did. But I renewed last year the day before it expired. Renewed it online and even when it was the first week of lockdown I got it in two weeks. I was floored. In years past I would renew a good 3-4 months in advance and one year it was easily 6 months late and hunting season was a few weeks away. Had to get the Alberta CFO involved and lo and behold I got it within days. The whole thing is a farce with wait times not consistent to say the least.
