Charged for 'wearing a mask in public'....
Who would have thought it was a crime to wear a mask in public?
http://news.nationalpost.com/news/wo...word-in-public
There are a lot of ladies out there who may need to take heed to this one to avoid arrest. Tammy Faye, are you paying attention?

I wonder what exactly the law is. If I wear a ski mask in public because it is cold I can get arrested? There has to be more to this law, and what about women that walk around with their faces covered? How about when folks wear surgical masks to avoid sicknesses? The actual law would be interesting to see.

A few more details ... http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crim...icle-1.3008776
" ... According to the Virginia law, it’s illegal “for any person over 16 years of age, with the intent to conceal his identity, wear any mask, hood, or other device, whereby a substantial portion of the face is hidden or covered, so as to conceal the identity of the wearer, to be or appear in any public place ... ”

I could be wrong, but I'm guessing that ^ law was written back in the day, with the KKK in mind.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the rash of clown mask wearing people?

Bill C-309 was brought into law in Canada in 2013 as a response to a rash of violent protests; it prohibits concealing your identity during riots and other "unlawful assemblies".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preven...Assemblies_Act
That said, it was always against the law to hide your identity when committing any crime ("disguise with intent"), but there was a high burden of proof. They had to prove you planned a crime, and if they could, then they could tack on this charge. Cops couldn't just arrest you for wearing a mask without that proof. Bill C-309 gave them grounds to arrest and charge you if you were wearing a mask and participating in riots.
So: In Canada, no worries about wearing a balaclava in public unless you're rioting or otherwise committing a crime.
Selkirk was right, though. In the States, anti-mask laws were brought into place as a response to the KKK in the middle of the 20th century.

So funny that if you wear a mask during the commission of a crime, it is an additional offence, but when swearing in as a citizen of a country, concealing your true identity is totally acceptable. God bless Canada. Allah wagbar

The people streaming into the Stampede grounds when the Comic-Con (or whatever they call it) is happening certainly raise a few eyebrows. They sure catch your attention when waking down the street on their way to the event.

In Canada masks are OK except when used with intent to hide identify while committing an offence.
Actually in many cases we have more freedoms than the country that boasts in song about being the land of the free.

Yup, I knew that. Still found the article funny, as they arrested him for wearing a mask, not wielding a sword. What was your point?

Your post was not all that funny and seemed to be just to bring out the hijab, ski mask and sword guys.
Other than Halloween, wearing that type of mask is unusual but to be newsworthy here? Give me a break!
Do you only expect positive remarks to such trivia?

We all find different things funny. Could you find the post where I mentioned a hijab, or made any mention of anything remotely about any religion, or how they dress?

I read the headline and saw the picture yesterday morning from Fox news
online.
First thing to come to mind was another example of the younger generation
not knowing reality from hollywood, what's really real and what's not.
The original superman was only able to fly on TV, when he actually jumped off a
building for real, he fell down.
The second thing to come to mind was (sick humor here) the guy was an
actor in a local play, dressed up at home and was on his way to the theater
when he got pulled over. :-)
It's not uncommon these days to see a lot of "weird things".
But totin' a sword in addition was crossing the line.
Glad they caught up with him before something bad happend.

Looooooser.....
I'd say he needs a timeout to think about his behaviour anyways. Maybe take some classes in jail and try to get a job when he gets out. The comic book store in town isn't hiring and the video store closed down. What's a guy to do?
