Default Question for the Ranchers

Just curious, many ranch names have Bar in them. What in tarnation does Bar mean? Thanks!

This started when cowboys got tired of standing knee deep in manure and smelling burning hair all day and they headed to town to the bar for some Forty Creek.

If you look at a cattle brand and it has a dash in it...that's called a bar.

-7 As in Bar Seven

But I like redfrogs explaination better....lol

If you see a bunch of pickup trucks parked in front of the Hotel in a small town when it is raining cats and dogs outside, that is due to "Bar Clouds".

Taking a wild guess, maybe it was an easy character to add to a brand?

As mentioned above its a "brand" thing.

Like "BAR 7" (-7) or "BAR U" (-U) or "A7" or "LAZY M" (a brand with the M on its side). Some brands have a letter backwards.

My brand is "LAZY son of a B"

Our brand is Bar TL with the bar on top of the letters. Rhuntley12 you are close, yes, it is easy to add a bar to a brand but I believe it has more to do with how open your brand is to avoid scabbing and blurring of your brand. Try not to brand them if the hide is wet so they don't look like you tried to kill them with a branding iron and don't pick a brand that has closed letters like a P or B so the heat doesn't smear the brand. I know guys that have brands like this and they cut out small sections of the closed letters to avoid smearing the brand.

Bar is just one. Whole bunch of others. diamonds, half diamonds, triangles , boxes, anchors and the list goes on.

very interesting, it makes sense now...I was totally baffled having no knowlege of ranching whatsoever...and yeah Grizz, now that you mention it, I have seen many ranch names with anchor and diamond as part of the name...cool. Thanks all!

Nice ! Mt - I like it. My dads was bar ZS on the hip and mine I took over from grandpa is barZS on the ribs. Have not owned any cattle for many years though but I have a limited company using the bar ZS. I think it is cool family heritage.
