Quick question about cooons
Hello. When I was looking for our coonhound pup. I came across an ad that said there dogs have been trained and exposed on raccoon in Alberta. And I was just curious if and where there is raccoon in Alberta? I was alway told there wasn't many if any in Alberta. Where I live west of Edmonton I have never seen any.
Thanks for your help

Lots in the Southern Alberta river valleys. Getting pretty established further north slowly as well. I saw one along HWY 2 north of Red Deer a few weeks ago too.

I have seen quite a few over the years around the Lethbridge/Taber area.
quite a few dead ones and a few roaming around.
Actually had one stuck i the dumpster of my old apartment. Called fish and wildlife and they asked me to put a 2x4 in there that it could walk up and get out. I took a few pictures as it was climbing out and watched it take off into the coulee behind the apartments.

I could have swore I seen one last fall just north of spruce grove on my way home from a hunt but when we turned around to see what it was we couldn't find it.

I know of two different farmers that had German Shepards killed by raccoons south of Grassy Lake. Had the buggers rip apart the interior of my grandpa's boat in the late '90's.

There are lots. Especially near main line railroad tracks. They can typically be found in river valleys where they don't have to run from swathers.
In Alberta there are still enough people with brains to shoot them on sight - Because of this they are very nocturnal. Best way I know to kill them is leg hold traps in the night and a 22 in the morning.

We should be allowed to night hunt them.
You can in Ontario and the darn things are invasive.

They were both chained up and the raccoons chased them around, got them tangled up and split their bellies open. The big male raccoons are just plain mean.

No season and no bag limit as long as you have permission on the land. Shoot them on site as far as I'm concerned.
