Default Registering a boat trailer help please

I recently purchased a little dingy with a trailer, and am trying to find the vin no. on the trailer. Can't locate a number and the province wants 105 dollars to assign me a no. plus I still have to register it after that. I know it was stupid on my part not to look into this before purchasing. Anyone know where the vin would be? the trailer had been freshly painted so could be hidden, it's value would be under a thousand if that makes any diff. and I don't think the previous owner had it registered as it looks like it was kept at a marina. Any thoughts?

Call it a home made trailer and use your drivers lic number as the VIN....

Default Alberta Assigned VIN Program

Hunter Trav is correct. All trailers that were homemade or produced without a VIN must now have one in Alberta. Google it. The cost given is correct. $105 for a single axle trailer, $450+- for a double or more. There is no getting around it. I bought one that had been registered without a proper VIN. When I went to transfer it to me I couldn't until I got a proper VIN. They stamp it on the tongue and one other place. Took a couple of weeks to get the appointment and the guy came to my home to do it. Took less than 30 minutes. No safety inspection, just the stamping of the VIN and he gives you a paper to take to the registery for the registration.

It was a very painless process for me as well, but I do see they have raised the cost of getting it done. Only cost me $50 when I did mine...

I was trying to figure out if punching my own in was worth it, pretty sure that it would get picked up when they check their records. I guess I can understand the rational behind it, they're making sure i didn't steal it. Just seems a little excessive, I'll be in at over 200 dollars for a little dingy trailer.

Yup, rules are getting tighter as time goes, back in the day when I registered my homemade trailer was told: "no vin ?, make up a number then..."
