Boyds Stocks - Any Experience?

Thinking of ordering a Boyds stock for my deer getter. At $189 USD, doesn't seem like too bad of a pill to swallow. Basically just wanted to know what the ordering process was like...the usual stuff like wait times, cost of shipping, customer service experience etc. Also fit and finish - does the rifle drop right in or can I expect to have to put in extra work sanding/filing, bedding, refinishing yada yada yada...?

I have ordered 3 for my self and at least another 3-4 for my sons. All fit well with no sanding/filing required. These were all for rimfire, I have not ordered one for a centerfire.

Added one to my 700, 6.5 x 284 build. Price is right and no issues with fit and finish. I would buy another stock from Boyd.

Here as well. Real good value in the three laminates I have purchased. Fit & Finish is great. Delivery was within the time frame that was indicated on ordering... about six weeks at the time. Make sure you order exactly what you want the first time around. Changes can cost at lot of additional time.

Ordered on for my pump 06, the bolt hole for the butt stock is way deeper then the bolt hole in the synthetic stock on the 7600 Remington’s. So I used a steel pipe cut to 8 3/4” if I remember right. Fits great, but if you order for a shotgun (or pump action firearm) you have to order the two stocks separately, same bill just two separate items on the purchase. I have a few more stocks picked out for future projects.

The wait wasn’t an issue at all either, I think I had mine in a couple weeks, maybe 3?? Really affordable, nice wood stocks for the wait and cost. Cheaper then investing the work and man hours into making your own.

I bought 3 for centerfire rifles.
Fit and finish was darn good on all three.

I will add that for centerfire rifles you should at a minimum epoxy bed the recoil lug area. I went quite a bit beyond the minimum BTW.

I have bought five

1st was for a savage 10 ml-II - great stock

2nd was a custom 700ML stainless converted to 458 smokeless ML - it fit well looked great in pepper laminate Thumbhole. Gun shot 1/4 MOA to 300 yards

3rd was a savage 220 bolt slug gun and fit was awesome

4 and 5 was TC Encores with match grade Brux 458 smokeless ML bull barrel. One was applejack and the other was apple jack - just beautiful. Both shot half MOA

Recoil on the first two are significant. .458 @ 2900 fps x 300 grain pills is pretty stiff and they handled it like a champ.

To me the grip area feels like I'm holding a 2x2. wouldn't own one for that reason.

Have ordered and installed dozens. Price for what you get can't be beat and now that they have walnut along with the laminate they are impossible to beat value wise. Even their checkering looks good. Like all wood stocks they do benefit from being bedded or pillared.

Only time I make them from scratch now is if I want a stock they don't carry or I want a real fancy piece of wood; then I use a duplicating service and finish it myself. A lot more work and time so ends up quite a bit more costly than ordering from Boyd's.

My only suggestion is that if it is your first time ordering, call and speak with a rep. I tried the online ordering and pooched my order. Not saying it was Boyd's fault but when I received my product I was disappointed. No upgraded recoil pad or checkering which I thought I had ordered. The product I did received fit well and was good quality, just not what I was expecting.

This is just my limit experience with Boyd so take it for what it is worth.

Like said previously, make sure you order it exactly how you want it. I have ordered 3 and all were great. The first 2 were when prices were right around $100 and the exchange rate was good. The last one surprised me a bit. When you add a recoil pad, shorten the length of pull, change color, that was it for additions. Price, plus $53 US for shipping and exchange at 1.35. Stock was $350 - $400 cdn to my door but still happy with it.

I installed one on a Remington BDL. Fit was terrible and I had to do a lot of work to get it right.

I prefer the unfinished stocks, I like this option the best because the finished feel like holding on to a 2X4 the downside is no checkering or finish options.

I had a bit of a mixed experience. Mine did take some fitting for sure. Also they didn’t send any of the hard ware just the wood. I didn’t even know what I was missing since it was my first one. They ended up sending out all the missing pieces but it took a lot of emails to get sorted. The stock is great though. My $160 stock came to over 300 once all was said and done as well. Just shipping and exchange was a killer.

I've not ordered any, but have ended up with a couple over the years. It's nice to have options, but I agree that all of the ones I've handled were very thick in the tang and grip area.
