7mm "oh"8 or "ought" 8
I had someone talking to me the other day about the 7mm08 and it got me wondering. HOw do you all pronounce it? I have only heard it called a 7mm "oh"8, or a 7 "oh"8. The the other day someone called it the 7mm "ought"8. Kind of an tomatoe-tomatos type thing but I'm just curious.

I always picture a .70 calibre when I hear that....a long way to neck up a humble .308!

odd? aought !! as in what elderly people use to call zero.
.308 is the name because its the bullet diameter.
30-06 is because of year isnt it? 30 calibre came out in aought 6?
so in that case 7mm aought 8 wouldnt make any sense.
as its a 308 case with a 7mm bullet ....no?
thats my thinking anywho.

Generally in N.A. when we "wild cat" a cartridge to a new one we name it by stating the new "caliber" (7mm) and follow that with the parent cartridge.(.308)
When the cartridge in question here became "legitimate" as a factory round with factory rifles built for it, it was baptized 7mm-08. I pronounce that 7mm"oh 8. On the rifle barrel and on the head of the cartridge appears 7mm-08.
So if would be confusing to call it anything else. Like 708 or 7mil "ought" 8. If I asked a guy behind the counter at a sports shop if he had any 708 "shells" he would likely say "no sir".
In Australia they do a wildcat by necking .303 brit. down to .25 cal. I called it a .25/.303 and they said no its a .303/.25. They do drive on the other side of the road from us too.
A .303/.25 would make a nice deer/coyote round back in Alberta don't you think?

Elderly people lol.......................Children know better
It's aught, ought or naught....never "aought"......and it simply means zero. So 7mm aught 8 is just as reasonable as 30 aught 6
Even Jethro Bodine got it right when he said he wanted to be a double naught spy . Before your time though...
7mm aught 8 is fine by me.............but I call mine a 7OH8
