First teach the basics in a school field with a frisbee(land the hookless fly in it 15yards away), and get timing and casting down pat. Trust me, an hour of this will save you much aggravation at the Pond. Look up at Alberta outdoors website and it will tell you the closest stocked pond!! Good luck and good for you for showing someone this great sport(art)!!

Stocked ponds
I just had the Mrs catch her first trout on a fly Sunday at Open Creek dam. We were floating around in out boat. No trees or grass to bother on her back cast.
I too believe in lawn fishing. No asphalt or gravel as these ruin line. Spent many day as a kid casting to landscaping. Under the tree branches, the large rock. As many features around you as possible.
Good of you for getting someone into the sport. Just make sure you teach them the snotty elitist attitude. Lol.

The combination of going on the grass and reading up on it plus videos from your local library is a huuuge help. Think of it as teaching your kid driving and taking your kid driving in the farmers field first before you take him out in rush hour traffic.

Cataract Creek!!! A brookie in every spot a fish should be and they're always willing to take a dry.

Teach them how to roll cast well and don't worry about getting it way out there.
They'll catch more fish and won't spend all their time trying to get their line out of the brush.
Any of the local rivers will suffice.

If you lived further north Arctic Grayling in the the Little Smokey drainage would reap big and lots of fish for any first timer.

Did you just move here? Pardon me, but I find it odd that someone who lives in Okotoks and is teaching someone else fly-fishing, would not know a number of answers to that question himself.

Roll cast is the way to start. Did it yesterday with my niece, she caught fish, another flyfisher is born.
