Default .22's and Where to Buy (Edmonton)

Looking for a 22 bolt action (preferably with scope) for under 200. I've done some digging, and come across the Mossberg 802 Plinkster ($130, no scope), Savage Mark II ($210, no scope), and the Savage 300 series ($200 with scope).

What are your thoughts on these rifles? I'd be using it for plinking and grouse hunting.

Also, where in Edmonton are you buying rifles? Wholesale Sports seems to be the cheapest, while P&D and others seems more expensive.

If you don't like the choices above, what would you purchase instead?

Before you spend your money check out website of Bashaw Sports. Look under the Specials tab, scroll to Marlin section - they are having a tremendous sale, lots of choice, good service and products. This is a great place to deal, small town personal service.

I hear that the plinksters often have feed problems.

I'd spend a bit more and grab a 10/22 My wife and both have em and with no more alteration than a decent scope...we can consistently pound gophers at 200 meters not that there aren't dozens of other 22's that will do that.

the mossberg plinkster has been a favorite of mine. Very fun shooter and I have never had any problems with it. Very inexpensive and good quality, just have a hard time finding bigger magazines.

It depends on your definition of consistently. To me consistently, means with almost every shot. There aren't a lot of factory 22lr rifles that are accurate enough to hit gophers at 200 meters with almost every shot, especially with low priced ammunition. Then again, the majority of shooters aren't capable of hitting gophers with a 22lr at 200 meters with almost every shot.
If you are hitting gophers with almost every shot at 100 yards with a factory 10/22, you are doing quite well, if you are hitting gophers with nearly every shot at 200 meters with your 10/22, you are doing some spectacular shooting.

..................Had a fella that I worked with that bragged he would hit the 200 yard gong at our range consistently offhand with his Marlin 336 in .35 Rem I finally got the opportunity to go out shoooting with him. As I was getting ready he told me to piut my hearing protection on as he was going to let her rip at the 200 yard gong. He was doin pretty good. Too bad it was the [B]100 yard[B] gong he was actually goin for. Some people don't have a clue when it comes to distances. a .22 long rifle at a gopher at 200 yards? Consistently? I'll leave it at that.
