Default Learning to drive

How old where you when you learned to drive?

I was about 8 or 9 if memory serves correct, learned in a 67 Ford F100 with a 3 in the tree.

Thinking next time we're at the farm it's time to give my daughter a turn behind the wheel, she's 11.

I started when I was 5. My first solo down the road was probably at the age of 7.

Early 60's gmc stepside, 3 on the tree. Watched my gramps drive it on my uncles farm, yrs later i got to drive it just before it was parked. I was 12 then, 2 yrs later i drove the old ford p/up with a 4 speed from the pasture back to the farm on an old road allowance as my uncle was chasing cows that got out and they would follow the truck. Freaked my mom out when we got closer to the farm and she realised i was driving and my uncle was no where around. Same fall i started driving the old 72 jeep we used for hunting while dad sat in the passenger seat. Good times.

From your title, I thought you might be turning over a new leaf Rod

I remember sitting on my brother's knees steering while he ran the pedals, no idea what age, '59 Fargo stepside.

Actually driving would be the hay truck, about 10 I would guess.

You know how they're always peeing their pants when a kid does something remotely dangerous.

I agree, they're out there. Mine is a bit different though, when he asks me how my daughter is doing and I tell him, 'she's been out shooting gophers, she's doing well in archery' he smiles and says, 'beats the crap outta playing video games all day'.

one of my first jobs was driving a tractor pulling the rake which flipped over the cut straw so it could dry.

pretty sure it was a massey from the 1930's and I was 9yo

clutch was near as long as my leg

I grabbed a minivan one night in Tajikistan to get a ride back to the place I was staying.

Hopped in the back and away we went.

Took a look up front and I kid you not, the driver was 8yo MAX and his brother the co-pilot was even younger.

They could drive and navigate at least as well as most Calgary drivers I see in town.

They said when their dad was not working (driving the minivan/cab) they would drive around and make some money on their own.

I was 5 the first time that I can remember. We were square baling. Dad put me in the seat, said that row there has to go in there. I could not reach the pedals so he got me going then went back and rode the stuker.

could not wait to drive as a kid. The old JD tractor was easy with the hand clutch and dad had put power steering on it. Rode the seat of a Fordson Major for many years hauling round bales two at a time as well as raking hay. Did chores with that tractor. Cultivated and harrowed with a Case 830 when I was 10 or so.

Had a 56 Ford 3 ton that was a grain truck then converted to the bale hauler. Ran that one for many years before I was qualified to get my drivers license.

Don't remember how old I was when I started drivin' but do remember my first traffic ticket at 13 for drivin' without a driver's licence...110km from home... and the cop let me drive back because he knew Dad needed the pickup and the parts I was pickin' up.

Ticket came 3 bucks and $2 court costs
