Default Ever wonder how short versions of names came to be

I have always wondered how certain names got made shorter in ways that werent even close to their original names.
The names like Richard is the original for dick. I thought Rick would be a much suitable candidate. Or robert with bob, wouldnt rob be better. Another one is bill for william. Its all really odd for me.
The name Kevin for example. The short version is Kev but maybe I should start making it Dev.
Just some random thoughts in my head.

That is the last nickname for Kevin I would ever think of LOL! I would go more with kev or kev-o or k man, or something like that.
