DO you want a traditional wood-handled axe or are you OK with the modern take by Fiskars? I have one of the Fiskars X27s and it works fantastically. I have developed a blemish on mine where from overstrikes but apparently Fiskars replaces them on warranty when this happens (they're not able to be re-handled like a traditional axe). I'll be exercising that option soon on mine as a safety precaution. The Fiskars are available many places, including Canadian Tire. If you want a traditional splitting maul then Lee Valley Tools is a source for two more expensive splitters. I have the Iltis Oxhead splitting axe and it pales in comparison to my Fiskars.

I think that most of the cheaper no-name Asian made axes (both splitting and chopping) have horribly tempered steel, if they're tempered it at all. The steel is so soft they don't seem to hold an edge for any period of time.

Lee Valley carries Gransfors Bruks. Can't beat handmade Swedish craftsmanship!

grouse hunter is correct...I have this axe and it's served me well for a few years.

Wholesale used to carry some wetterlings forest axes and hatchets, which I have as well, however I'm not sure if they still bring them in.

OxHead splitter from Lee Valley. Best splitter I have ever used. Have used many but was sold on the Oxhead the first time I tried one.

Thanks for the info guys. I've been using the same one for years. Don't remember where it came from. But I have had to replace handles almost every year lately and getting tired of it.

Why do you have to replace the handle ?

I'll put in my vote for the Fiskars as well. I bought one last year and I can't believe how well it works.

x2

Mine has years and years of use. Original handle. Money well spent. We use to heat exclusively with wood...

Used my FiL's Fiskars a couple winters ago. Not sure the model. It was stupid cold, somewhere around -35C... Handle shattered. Maybe it was only as a result of the temperature. Regardless, I'm not impressed by them.

Fiskars, I have the x36 and wow do I split like a mad man. I split 2-4 cords of wood with it a year and I haven't even needed to sharpen it.

Fiskars is terrible.

Read above post...

American, Swedish, or German axe head. American hickory for handle.

If you want to spend some $$$!! and wait a year, check out an axe from John Neeman out of Latvia.

Fiskars are not very good. Sure they are sharp as all get out but will chip pieces of the blade off VERY easy. Buddy brought a new one on our fishing trip and after chopping wood the first night there were two chips out of it-- and this was on jack pine on a big splitting block, no rocks or misses. Better off with anything else for the money.

I've been using a Fiskars x27 for years. I don't split a TON of wood, but it has held up flawlessly.

I got one dent in the edge after hitting a rock- just filed down the burr and it splits just as well as it ever did.

Fiskars axes are not junk. People just like to hate on the big name stuff. For what they cost, you can't go wrong.

Yup. I have a Fiskars as well for a few years now. Best axe I have owned so far. It gets used frequently in the summer for splitting wood while camping and has held up well.
I am sure other axes are as good or better but good luck finding something better at the same price level.

Cabelas will often have Wetterlings in stock as well.

I have the Fiskars in various sizes and am quite pleased with how they split.

For a mass production axe, I don't think anything can compare to the Fiskars x27 splitter.
Sure Swedish hand forged axes are great...I own 2 myself, but for one third the cost the x27 should be your first buy.

Mine is still flawless after 3 years and 12 cords split.

I have the gransfors splitter. Got it this year. Ploughed through a cord pretty quick.
Of note, it was my first splitter and hadn't thought about the fact that they don't stick into rounds that well, so it's rare that you'll do an inverse blow. That said most rounds up to 14" diameter are one and done.

Default Axe work

I have an Iltus Oxhead 27" for limbing and general small work.

For splitting I use a cheap fibreglass handled, rubber collared Princess Auto splitting maul that is about eight pounds.

With a good swing, it will split just about anything.

Fiskars are readily available (Cansdian Tire for example) and are hard to beat.

That new one was on the CT shelves briefly before selling out, a splitting/post maul and I noted it was made in the Far East rather than Fiskars home turf.

id not realize Fiskars were made in differant places. Maybe that was the problem with my buddies fiskar that chipped easilly. I know after seeing that one I would never spend a lot of money on one.

Good call caber , head forged in Taiwan/assembled in Vietnam.Im sure the quality isn't as good, but I prefer it over x27 for heavier work.
