If they are improficient with a 243 and can't hit anything with it, they will shoot even worse with a harder recoiling 30-06 and wound even more game with it. If your hitting around the edges a bigger gun doesn't help.

You missed the implication, there are so many more hunters using the '06, there are a lot more deer taken with it.

As far as hitting around the edges, the other side of that is guys that are sub-moa with a 243 aren't going to be off-paper with an '06

6 moose, 1 caribou, 2 bears, 1 mule buck with .243
Zero lost animals, all but 2 iirc were one shot kills.
2 moose with the good ol 30-30 as well and 1 bear.

Im no proponent of the 243, but certainly no opponent either.
Excellent rifle for any Deer alberta has to offer.

Would I take it on a P7 mule deer hunt?
Prob not, id want as much bang for the buck as I can handle on a trophy hunt.

If primary purpose of the hunt is Food, give er.

You must have some mighty big gophers around there. Must be over a thousand pounds if a 243 is barely adequate for them

The media would define the .243 as "A high powered rifle".

I know people who can't kill a moose with a 338.
Its all about shot placement.

Of course it is, everyone who uses a 243 says that, on every thread every time all day long.

Default Quick math

150. White tail
If you are in your early 40s. 30 years of hunting. Never missed a season
That's 5 deer every year for 30 years
Please explain ???

It's made for hunting!!! i like the mentality of people, the bigger the caliber the bigger the animal you will kill. Even with the big calibers if you pull a shot (more like flinch) while shooting at an animal it could lead to a wounded animal. If you learn to shoot a smaller caliber better you will kill just as many bigger animals. Most people don't shoot enough to have the confidence to shoot well so it's easier to say the bigger caliber is the way to go. I have seen lots of animals run around wounded with big calibers as well.

I like the mentality of people the smaller the caliber means your a better shot. A bigger caliber within reason, 308, 30-06, 303. Will not effect a person more than an inch or two, still well with in the kill zone. Now, I know you guys with the 243 are soooo good there is no chance your perfect shot mentality would ever allow you to miss that perfect area but if you did, heaven forbid, that animal is gone. Now if you miss that perfect spot with a larger caliber then the wound channel is much larger, causing more damage and more blood, thus more trail and a faster bleed out and higher chance they bed down sooner. If your a little person, a boy or a women that's small and that's all you can shoot then have someone back up the shot or get some reloads for a 308 that are backed off a bit or take up soccer!

Oh my a squabble....

The 243 win is capeable, the 338 win mag is capeable, unfortunately people are not capeable.

Seen shooters of mighty boom sticks very good at taking game, also shooters of little boom sticks too.

Know your rifle, practice, enjoy the hunt and your freezer will be filled every season.

Does a elk gut shot with a 243 go any farther than one gut shot with a 308? Anything I've ever shot with a 243 has been dead.

Lol. Eat a snickers. Not a mini gun hero at all. Got a 243. Love it but I shoot a different gun that I suppose would make a Xbolt7mm classified as a mini gun. 243 is quite adequate.
I guess you're not dense because you do realize you're in the presence of awesomeness.

I settled on 95gr fusions, they gave me the best accuracy/performance ratio out of the rounds I put through. I will see how it performs in the field this upcoming season on a doe for sure. Oh and I know wrong thread but if anyone is interested in teaming up I hunt the swan hills area.

I made a comment about this earlier in the thread. Was wondering about those numbers as well. Could be he's well travelled.

Maybe he lived somewhere like New Zealand or grew up Stateside.
Want an eye opener?
Ask someone like Southernman how many big game animals he has shot with small caliber rifles .

Default 25-06?

This might be an appropriate place to ask this question. I was looking into a smaller caliber for a deer rifle (and an excuse to get another rifle) and I really like the looks of the 25-06 round on paper (specs), but I've never shot one. Besides not having as many ammo options as the .243, what's been people's experience with the 25-06? Thanks

A great wildcat that Remington capitalized on!
Hornady actually designed their hollow point boat tail 120 grain specifically for hunting elk with the 25/06 !
