What makes your list? Top 10 flies of all time.
Another outdoorsman (7RemMag) mentioned in the "Lake Trout on Dry Flies" thread, that the Stimulator makes his top 10. I agree, as it's a super versatile fly and makes a good prospecting (searching) fly too.
That made me think about what would be in my top 10. What I came up with was:
- Adams (parachute)
- Tom Thumb
- W/W Worm (weighted/wired worm, San Juan worm, etc)
I can think of a bunch of other possibilities but would be much more interested in hearing other's thoughts. Regional differences, preferred style of fishing, trendy flies, etc) all likely have an influence.
So, who's in your top 10?!

Sure. A zug bug is just an off-shoot of a prince nymph, which is a classic in and of itself.

I actually forgot about the prince nymph. My first day at the Crossfield ponds was a prince, until they started rising and then it was Adams.
I have only used one Adams this season and I have well over 30 fish on it. It’s a little fuzzy at this point and could probably use a couple passes on the sharpener. Either that or retire it into the visor of the truck.

I'm primarily a stillwater trout fisher who grew up fishing BC waters so my fly selection is based off that:
- pheasant tail nymph with a gold bead head
- Knouff Lake Special
- Pumpkinhead
- BC Blood leech
- Chromie
- Ice Cream Cone
- Deer hair caddis
- Tom Thumb
- Adams
- Black O'Lindsay

I'm new to the game too (6 years) and I fish mostly stillwater.
My favorite flies are:
Carey Special in grey, olive and rust
Rubber Bugger in Olive and Rootbeer
Hogan's Red headed stepchild (weird name but great little fly)
Black bunny leech pattern
Prairie Doggin Caddis pupa
Pat's rubber legs
Bitch Creek (orange)
Phil Rowley's Drag Queen (deadly in the summer)
Balanced leeches in olive and claret
Chironomid (grey boy, black & red ice cream cone)

Hares ear, pheasant tail, t bone, foam hopper, stimulator, generic 3-articulation synthetic material streamer, sparkle minnow, balanced Vegas leech, size 18 bloodworm, gunmetal chironomid. With those you’re good for pretty much anywhere in western Canada

Depends somewhat on when and where I am going;
mayfly nymphs of various styles, weighted, not weighted, flashbacks, emergers and in many colours
damsels
caddis pupa, Tom Thumbs
dragon nymphs, floating, sinking
worms of various kinds, San Juans, squirmies, atomics
a variation of a Renegade, summer duck dub & furnace hackle
deceivers, usually start with chartruese & white
clousers
wooly buggers, mostly black based, some white, some green, some brown.
chironomids, usually start with a black & red w/black bead.
these days I add blobs and boobies as well.
For dries I usually take adams, humpys and mikulaks, griffiths, elk hairs

99.5% of my fishing is done for browns, and I only fish one fly. I started a one fly season 5 years ago and haven't looked back.
