caliber similar to 270 win
What is a non-obscure caliber similar to a 270win? My wife shoots my 270 right now but I need to get her a left handed rifle and was just considering what other similar calibers there may be. Primarily used for deer hunting. was thinking maybe a 25-06 or 280.

You’d do well for her with a 25-06, 243, or 6.5 creedmoor. Among others.

Probably the most options for you will come with the 6.5 Creedmoor. Seems everyone is making a rifle in that chambering.

I would look at the 6.5s, likely the 6.5x55, 6.5x284, or 6.5prc.

7-08 comes pretty close.

280 Rem would be the closest cartridge-wise.
7mm-08 would be an excellent cartridge for what she needs it for, and is chambered in more rifles so selection would be better.

No shortage of choices in a 6.5, only a few less in 7mm, If she's good with an 06 size case, great, otherwise go with something based on a 308 or x57 sized case. Lot of choices out there these days, none of them are bad.

270 Win comes in every left handed rifle bring made.
7mm-08 would be the next closest IMO.

You have a 270 now and she likes it. Every gun that comes in LH also comes in 270. That and 30-06 are the most universally available LH options. No new dies to buy, no need for different bullets or powder, or if you don't load, same factory ammo. I really don't see the downside to two rifles using the same cartridge unless you are getting another a long ways different than what you already have.

7-08 great underrated cartridge...120 pills for deer size critters and 140 for moose/elk....Tikka T3x Hunter....take a look at these beauties.

We will likely go with a 270 again, but was just considering what other calibers would be similar. Need to get her one for her cadomin November sheep hunt and then onwards. Just having a hard time finding a good used 270 in left hand that isn't stainless synthetic (she likes wood stock even though I have tried to sway her).

No synthetic? She’s a keeper! Like many others have proposed, I’d be looking for a 7-08 or a 6.5 CM

I will keep an eye open for a lh walnut and pm u if I see one. I have a lh 7x57 Zastave that I slimmed down the stock a lot on. They are a great gun for about 800 bucks. High gloss blue and walnut stock. I have owned a half dozen and they shoot well. I would check tradex and a couple of other spots for a 270 Zastava. They cost new about what a used gun goes for.

Really if you had anyone of these you really do not need the others ... put your eyeballs on a 280 rem or 280ai as well

Lots of 30-06 out there and if the slightly higher than 270 recoil is an issue you could step down in bullet weights to achieve same. Brass is same same if you reload
Outside of that any of the 6.5's or a 7-08 would do just fine and the recoil less than 270...If that's even an issue
For the record the 270 is in its own class. The excellent one.

270 win is a great caliber,280 rem is probably the closest to it but probably harder to find.7-08 would probably be perfect for her.6.5 x55 would be next on the low side but the 6.5 creedmoor is a awesome deer sized game rifle to.Don't think a deer or sheep would tell the difference in any of them unless your shooting over 300 yards.

Hard to beat the 270 for the majority of game in north america, if your changing anyway then the 7mm08 or 280 are also very good as is the 6.5 PRC, lot's of choices

308 win has the exact same recoil for short action, 6.5 creedmoor if you want less recoil, 270 win for if you choose long action

This!
Also agree the 270 is in it's own class. It can do a bunch, burns another 15-ish grains of powder than the 7-08 or 6.5 cm though...so go with one of the short actions and she will be even happier with it.
