Default Dumb question

For some reason I don't know the answer to a question posed by my better half.Is it illegal in Alberta to hunt with a non-restricted AR ( Daniel defense, RRA, Bushmaster - son on and so forth) in say 6.8 or .300 blackout?

Thanks guys!

non restricted?
I am unaware of ANY non restricted firearm that you cannot hunt with, providing the calibre is .23 and up for big game.

As long as the firearm meets the cartridge size regulations (over the min caliber requirements) as well as meets the maximum magazine size requirements....why would it not be ok to use?

....I am not saying it IS ok to use....but if it meets all the regulation requirements and is not a restricted firearm....

*EDIT* huntinstuff is quick on the draw....thats what all the ladies say

I don't consider that a dumb question.

You specifically mentioned AR variants though and I'm not aware of any AR variants that Allan Rock did not make restricted in Canada...

Thanks for the quick replies guys! I recall reading somewhere online about this a long time ago and I believe I saw a bunch of Colt AR's being illegal to use while hunting - it made no distinction of calibres though.

My wife's interested in hunting in the near future and has a thing for some "black rifles".

I think you need to distinguish between ARs/AR variants and other semi autos that are non restricted. ARs are restricted. There are two levels of law at work here...Federal determines the classification of the rifle and where it can be used and provincial that dictates legal calibre for big game hunting. The first step is figuring out which ones are non-restricted then which ones come in appropriate calibres.

All of those examples you have given (Daniel Defense, RRA, Bushmaster, etc) are ALL Restricted.... ALL AR15/M16 Variants are Restricted or Prohibited.

If you want to hunt with a "Black" Rifle in ALBERTA, here are some of your NON Restricted Choices:

- Robinson Arms XCR L (6.8SPC, 7.62x39mm)
- Robinson Arms XCR M (.308)
- Kel-Tec RFB Bullpup (.308)
- M305 or M1A (.308) ... it's "black" if it has a synthetic stock... right??

Some of the more "Red" rifle Non Restricted "Evil" looking guns legal for big game in Alberta are:

- Valmet Hunter (.243, 7.62x39mm, .308, 30-06)
- CZ-858 (7.62x39mm)

You have other cool choices if you want something for varmints only, or punching paper, lots more available in Non Restricted .223, but cannot be used for big game.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Maybe I'm getting mixed up with AR's and other "black rifles". Like the H&K sl8, the xcr etc. maybe I need to go do some more research.

Edit* thanks desert faux - I was writing this when you wrote yours!
