Default first sauger of year nsr

popped down to the nsr this afternoon. it was kind of cool but if 4 and 5 yr old kids can go sledding i figured i could man up. got there at 4 pm and left at 6 pm. caught 6 wallies 2 of which were a fair size and my first SAUGER of the year. heres a few pics and also a pic of the "thill" light that i tape to the end of my rod. it's very tiny and you can use it over and over again but it is VERY bright.

Wow that is definitely a nice sized sauger compared to anything I have caught or seen caught. Well done.

Your probably catching lots of walleye. Plenty of them in the river.

I bet that's the first Sauger on the NSR of 2013, and possibly even in the province. Especially being a river fish and not much angling on the rivers being iced over.

Definately is a great Walleye fishery. Catch them best at night when the moon is out.

i fish the nsr a lot and the very best walleye fishing starts at dusk and continues all night. i really find it amazing that they see that well at night.
never thought to measure that sauger but he was about 13". had him on my rod 3 times before i landed him. kept thinking it was a baby wallie who could'nt swallow the hook.

there is a zero limit on walleye and sturgeon and you can keep one pike over 25". other restrictions on most all other species except suckers. last year i caught close to 700 fish of all types (except my first sturgeon) on the nsr and i harvested i pike and about a dozen sukers and goldeye for a buddy who likes to eat them. everything else went back to grow bigger. 2013 count 33 caught 0 harvested.
there was an incident last year where some a-hole caught a sturgeon and cut it open and took it's eggs and kicked it back in the river. he was arrested and his truck impounded by the time he got back to the parking lot.
