Good weather for heating techs and taxi drivers, not good for most other people. -36 windchill here this morning, so we cut out morning run to 25 minutes. I will top up my wood supply in the house, the wood stove is going to be used a lot .

Knock on wood furnace is still running after Caber fixed it last time. But now our fridge has bad lifter noise

Smoking anything when it's this cold can be a real pain in the arse …. let us know how it went - seriously looking for ideas next time I try and do this myself to avoid the failures of my past ….

Wouldn't results be nearly the same, just burning a whole lot more pellets ?? Never really tried - I've got a Louisiana grill where you set it and forget it... Why would temp be lower ??

Cheers.

I'm sure it will be interesting and stressful at the same time lol. I have a couple of drum smokers I've used for years. They do struggle in extreme temps. Mrs Bacon (the boss) bought me a vertical pellet smoker for xmas which is what I'll be using. I'm a little old fashioned but have to admit this rig is pretty slick. We have it set up in the tent shed with the Harley and the old 52 Chevy. It's nice because I can sit out of the elements and smoke a cigar and daydream while supper is cooking.

And for the record it's a half of a brisket... a friends freezer crapped out a while ago and sawed it in half in order to save it. Half for me and half for some else. With some buns and some slaw I'm sure it will be good. Hopefully we're not eating at midnight tho.

I have a small smoker that doesn't stay warm enough when it gets really cold.

Maybe a higher quality unit, or one with heavy steel, or insulation might not be too bad - I don't know - just based on what I saw.

My parents had a 5x7 full cinder block smoke house growing up, you could do 10 hams, a side a beef a hundred pounds of sausage all at once .... seriously .... so never really had a need for, or used a small one until I bought it for a trip, and used it a few times. Wasn't impressed.

I’ve got to install some large equipment outside for work. First time on a project like this, and solo. Should be a chilly 4-5 days.

In Jan 2007 I was in Yakutsk in the Kamchatka region of Siberia doing some work at a gold mine project for Kinross, we had one morning where the official temperature was -54.5 C without the wind and not long after that I spent 3 weeks on baffin Island for baffinland iron mines corp. at the Mary River mine site and we regularly had temps near -45 C and normally had wind with them.

I certainly don't miss the weeks at a time where the temperature never rose above -40 in Fort McMurray in the early 80s.

Just tossed some anti-gel into my diesel fill and stocked up on a few common heating parts to be ready for the rush. 2nd season with a diesel and didn’t use anti gel last year, had a few occasions I think it would have helped with starting

My grandma was from Yakutsk, she was alway making fun of us complaining at -20C temps... She said that in -20 they were outside playing in the snow, sledding and skiing... Our generation isn’t that tough thou...

Wrap smoker in insulated moving blanket. Makes a really big difference, can smoke down to -25 even with the cheapie Little Chief model.

As far as the cold goes, keep the damn pine beetles in check and lots of other nasty stuff. Gets rid of all the climate protestors for 6 months at a time.
