One you can shoot accurately and easily are two good parameters to start with.

Do you plan to hunt with it? If so... Will you hunt in a blind?
How much do you have to spend on a bow and a dozen matched arrows?

Just trying to steer your question a bit.

Yes I would be using it for hunting, yes I have a blind, do not want to spend more then $450.00 on everything except heads.

I might suggest some thing with a larger sight window and drilled and tapped for sights just in case you find shooting instictively not as accurate as you may wish. If you are going to practice alot I would choose about 45 to 50 lbs at your draw length and about 60 inch for ease of shooting with fingers and a tab. For arrows a dozen xx75 aluminum with screw in points to aid in tuning to the bow. If you have adjustable weight on the bow (takedown) it will greatly help tuning and in turn consistancy.

Checkmate makes a pretty good bow and I think it is in that price range.

Checkmates run about 350 for the falcon model. Great bow for the price as that's what I currently shoot. If there are any trad shoots coming uP which I think there is (Calgary trad shoot may 1st) you should try to get in on it. You'll meet great ppl some who will let you try out some bows and give you a better Idea of what you'll look for or want. Plus there might be a dealer at the shoot too offering some great deals on good bows.

The Saba trad shoot was last weekend and it was a blast a dealer there offered a few great recurves for 250.00 I wish I brought more money I woulda picked one up.

I have a checkmate 56# takedown 56" and it's an awesome shooter. The falcons are nice and smooth and you may want to even consider the Atilla (shorter which might work better in the blind.

Other options are a used bow or a Martin X200. If you have not shot a recurve consistently it may take some getting used to in terms of draw weight.

Great site and great information sir. Thanks for the link! Should have warned me to turn down the speakers first though. I hit the deck when I heard the moose call out.

Yes I did say APA recurve. We custom built it two years ago and it shoots awesome. It is the regular short riser from APA with Limb pockets built to accept ILF limbs. I am shooting Trad Tech black max limbs out of it at 40lbs Im getting almost 220fps with a 320gr arrow. I have used it to win Nationals the last two years. If you are interested in one Give APA a shout and let them know they are thinking about making one for next year since this one is working so well. Tell them you would be interested in one and see what they come up with.

Here is a picture of it

Default Best Recurve Bow

I just traded off a casadore. The bow was well built, pretty fast and had one of the best grips I have had in a recurve. Great plains makes a nice bow.
