Default 6.8 Rem SPC Vrs 7.62x39mm

Hey guys,

I have only a limited experience with the Russian 7.62x39mm and am thinking about purchasing an semi-auto Bushmaster ACR or a Robson XCR , I would go for a 5.56mm but I want something with a bit more punch. Is there any real difference between the 6.8SPC and the old reliable 7.62x39 especially at longer ranges???

Thanks in advance!!

Never have shot the 6.8 SPC but if I recall correctly it was designed by the military to "bridge the gap" between the 5.56x45mm and the 7.62x51mm. It out preformed the 7.62x39mm inside of 500m. Basically a .30 Rem necked down to .277 cal to keep the short overall length to fit in the AR-15 platform.

Higher velocity and better BC (Edit: Compared to the 7.62x39mm) and the .277 is a proven hunting caliber I would think that the 6.8 SPC would work for most game at reasonable ranges.

Only problem might be finding factory loaded ammunition for it? Somebody else here probably would know better though since I have never actually fired one let alone owned one.

There is much written on the 6.8 spc and it's development and ballistics on the web. It is a good round and specifically good for young shooters. Hornady makes factory ammo and Cabelas for one carries it. It can be reloaded easy enough. It outperforms the 7.62x39 by quite a large margin according to the developers and military trials in theatre.
