Just finished 2 days fishing. Was tough for us, only 2 fish caught and 4 hookups that were lost at the hole. We were fishing over 20 to 50 feet thick schools of smelt everywhere we drilled. Bring bait!

Not that you can't catch Lakers in shallow water I've had better luck on cold lake in 80 to 100 feet of water

We were fishing everywhere from 40 feet to 100 feet of water. Only place we found any number of fish was 70 feet. At that depth there were shoals of smelt 50 feet thick, so we were fishing between the shoals and the ice in the top 20 feet of water. The Lakers were on top of the bait fish and hitting right under the ice. Best performing jig was the airplane jig in the same color as the smelt. The extra eradicate behavior of these brought them in.
Lots of chasers also but I think they were well fed!

I pulled one up the other day that had what looked like a burbot minnow in his mouth. Was green about 1 1/2" long had a wide head and his tail tapered off to a point like a tadpole. There were big schools of them passing through then you could see a laker pass over them on the sonar and they'd disappear. Lakers hit nothing but dead stick minnows that day. 80' of water.
Does anyone know where I can get a map that shows all the names of the bays around the lake online? It seems like every time I talk to someone about fishing the lake they mention some new bay I've never heard of and I can't find online any info.

Cold lake
Last Saturday my fishing partner out fished me really bad by dead sticking with a tube jig and minnow, but on Sunday I out fished him by very slowly jigging right off the bottom ( which is what I was also doing Saturday)?! You just never know!

I'm headed up as well. Friday to Monday. I'll be driving a JD gator side by side, pulling two tents. A clam and a black frabil. Come say hi.

Iced a few
We went out today, landed 5, lost 3 and missed 4-5 hits. 81cm was the biggest and only keeper, a few were close at 72.

Ice is about the same as when we were out, 12" to 14", about 8" to 10" of snow where I was fishing, there is some flood water but not to much

The lake got maybe another inch of snow by sat noon, still has flood water here and there.
What is going to be the show stopper is trying to get on the ice in a few weeks as the prov. boat launch is melting from all the traffic.
What surprised me this weekend ,their were groups of tents fishing just left of the prov boat launch a little and out about 300 yards and landing Lakers in around 100 ft deep, and they were keeps !

It started good on Fri but went downhill over the weekend. Caught 10 in 2-1/2 hrs down to 2 on Sunday.
Dan
Ps if anyone finds one side of ATV tire chains just north of the PP, probably within 1/2 mile from shore, could you let me know. I lost them on Sunday morning, they were brand new. Thanks.
