I wouldn't go there. Check out the regs as I am certain that area is not open until June 16

X2... It's closed, along with the vast majority of all eastern slope creeks and rivers until June 16.

Yeah giv'r.. lots of fish west of longview.. Easier access once you get into K country..no private land to (tres)pass across to get to the river. Bait ban and catch and release only (except brook trout).

No, Bowhunter is wrong. There's few to no fish up there. Don't go. Stay home. LOL

Anyone else heading up this weekend? I have never been and can't friggen wait. Finally been slamming them on the bow this year so I'm excited to see how the highwood is.

What do you guys recommend? Nymph? Streamer? Dry? I am assuming you just look for pools and have at er? Hahaha. Needless to say it should be a great time!

Went out tonight for the first time fishing the Highwood - by Longview. Got a cuttie right away. Not huge at around 15 inches. Caught a 5 inch bull on the dry after that and only had one other maybe 15 inch bull try for a streamer.
That was it so pretty slow start but fine for a first trip.

Pics:

Looking forwards to learning this river more and catching a huge bull

Awesome pics Snap! Cant wait to get out. I'm sure it will take me a few tries to get the hang of a smaller river. I started fly fishing on lakes and just finally learned the bow after many years. Hopefully these smaller streams aren't as frustrating!!!! hahaha.

Tight lines!!

P.S. what kind of dry??

Just set your expectations on size much lower than the Bow Or should I say average size.

Dry was the ole standby - the mosquito

I've fished the upper Highwood quite a bit over the years. there are lot's of decent fish up there and they generally reside exactly where the books say they should. They will get a bit picky when in a pool rising to a hatch but generally the larger attactors (12-14 bushy Wulff type flies or 8-10 hoppers) are the ticket. They stay floating longer and the fish will come up to get them. Hoppers will improve over the summer and once the green drakes start to hatch the fish are looking up. There should be some stones around soon as well.
