Sounds like the man in the recent Yukon Grizzly mauling used one of these devices to summon help. Got the SPOT X , worked well for me there. You work with a cell phone number and can text to selected e mail sites. If you activate the SOS function you can have 2 way texting with the emergency center. Never had a problem messaging. When you're not needing it, you can deactivate it and just pay a nominal monthly fee to keep it registered.
