Default hows wabamun been?

hey..hope everyone is having a good time with the nice weather and staying safe out there.

i am thinking about heading to wabamun this weekend for some pike over at seba beach..i had pretty good luck there last monday and just wondering if its still drivable or if its really getting bad..i have a 1/2 ton with 4x4. and also how has the fishing been? i think some of the pike were in a bit of shock from the colder water with the plant shut down. has the fishing picked back up? anways any info on how the ice is or how the fishing is would be great

stay stay out there and keep those lines tight

was out last saturday and it was slow. only managed two fish all day, one burbot and a real nice 36" pike that was fat. one friend got skunked and the other mangaged a couple of pike and a couple of white fish. we were on the south shore straight across from Fallis point (RR51).

the ice was fairly decent. around 18" thick still. we quaded on so not much of an issue. but it is supose to be +14 today, so i would be pretty cautious around shore as it will probably be pretty sloppy and thin.

and th eplant is still operating. suppose to shutdown early next year is the plan. still plenty of warm and open water around the townsite.

Rgds

Was there on saturday. Northwest* Side. Just to the left of the access and about 100 yards out at the 20 ft drop. And the pike were biting like they had been all winter.
hit after hit after hit. Great day. One of my buddies managed a 14 pounder. I pulled a 10.

id say its worth a try anyways. It was almost one of them "Cant Keep Em Off" Days Slowed down at 2 - 2:30 Picked up again at 4.

I wouldnt taking a truck out. But mabey a quad or snowmobile if you got it.
You dont even need it tho. where we were it was a short walk to where all the pike were. the waters murky. So You Gotta Move that minnow Around alot so they can see it.

I was out on the open water in a boat on Sunday afternoon in front of the warm canal. The amount of open water is getting pretty big and is open about half way down the dock. It is really easy to launch a boat now. The pike were not biting well when we were there, caught only one and lost a couple. It was slow for all 6 boats that were out there then. We saw a ton of huge ones though scattering in front of the boat. The guys next to us landed a good one in the high teens. Another guy said they were biting better just before dark on Saturday evening when they landed a 25 pounder.

When we were there about 10 days ago, there was only one rule for the bait. Go big or go home. 8-10" Mackeral were the most productive bait. Can get a 2lb bag at Superstore in Spruce Grove for $7. We only caught 1 smaller than 10lb, biggest was 15lb. We watched the guys next to us catch a monster, they scaled it and said it was 30lb.

This was on the open water in front of the Canal in the NE part of the lake. What a good time. Wished I lived closer!

Was there two days ago and again today. Managed two pike through the ice one being about 10lbs, and the other being 17.We were using the large chub mackrel from stupid store. Got skunked today. Talked to some guys fishing by the mouth of the canal, and they were catching pike 9lbs - 20lbs. They were slow but steady for what I understand. Going to try the canal tomorrow from shore, hopfully beat my 17lb gater. As for launching you can probably launch a 14, as long as you can lift the motor clear of the bottom, or remove it compleatly. Good luck to all.

I was out there last Sunday by the peir in town and ice was about 12-13 inches. Some spots were solid black ice and others were 9 inches solid ice and than 4 inches of white ice. And lots of snow. Wouldn't recommend driving on yet. Im probably heading out Sunday morning if anyone wants to join. So far looks like I'm flying solo for the day

This thread is a month old FYI. Nobody is out because of all the floodwater and snow.

I believe they shut the plant down that warmed the water last year sometime.

You are correct Wayne the plant closest to the town of wab closed last year. I believe there is a plant on the south end of the lake that has to put water into the lake still but I don't think it's for cooling therefore not creating an "open water" situation. Someone on this forum works there and I recall them mentioning something about this. But I could be wrong, or drunk?

But there's no way Im wrong and drunk!!

Default plants

Mooseknuckle you are right, The plant near the village of Wabamun is closed, the plant on the other side (Sundance) doesn't use lake water to cool their turbines, they have a section of the original lake cut off with a road that they use.

There is a fresh water coming into the lake at the Sundance plant though. To help mitigate the effects of the mining drainage that doesn't reach the lake. Anyways where is comes out the ice is fine to walk on, but not to drive on, it is usually really dark in colour.
