Haven't been out his season but spent probably 2 full weeks last winter. We had the most success on lipless rattle cranks and flutter spoons, on both pike and walleye. There's a few obvious spots out there, a quick check on navionics and you should be able to see the areas you want.

There was a guy out there fishing beside us with jig heads and minnows. Already aware of the no bait rule, he insisted he'd been fishing there for so long it didn't matter. Might have taken offense but he threw back everything he caught, so live and let live. I guess I found the comedy in the fact we were catching 2 or 3 times the fish per person that he was. We figured he would be killing it with bait but he wasnt having the success he expected.

We will be up there next long weekend, let us know how she looks!

Do people try to drive in with trucks in the winter?

When I was there in September, we drove quite a ways past the lodge and camped on crown land, but the road in was awful - tons of water and huge ruts. We damaged all 3 trucks and both boat trailers, and we're all fairly experienced with driving off-road.

Never done it in the winter, but I feel like I'd want to have a snowmobile for sure....

I agree with Findaway's post - I seem to catch more Pike and Walleye through the ice using a rattlin rap or some other fluttering or noisy lure. I only use bait for tip ups (where allowed to do so).

And .... yes .... the road into Winefred SUCKS. Need a good 4x4 and the ability to drive one with reasonable intelligence.

To be honest I think the road is considerably better to drive in the winter. Ive never tried to access it in the summer but last year I stayed in camp beside Kirby lake and made the drive to Winefred at least 3 times a week. While I was driving a 3/4 diesel 4x4, there was no time I even needed 4x. It is a very skinny road and steep in the final approachto the lodge, but all in all a fairly pleasant drive. Take it slow and you'll be on the fish in no time!

Cheers

Default Winefred lake

Thanks for the info. Is Kirby accessible by truck in the winter. Might try there for a few perch too. We had Goodluck at Winefred with storm walleyes.

Drove into Winnie and grist about a month ago. Roads were good. Used atv's to cruise the lakes. Fishing sucked at win. Good thing we found a few trout at grist. Load up on the vaseline if you park on the trappers road, $100 just to park! Will never go there again.
