Default flesher

I have owned one of these for over 20 years now and handier than sliced bread! It does take time and patience to get so you are not cutting the hide, but the nice part is you can adjust the cutting depth to prevent this. It takes me approx. 2-3 minutes to have a coyote ,fisher or mink spotless. One thing though-your compressor needs plenty of CFM(at least 9) to keep this tool happy RPM wise!

I only use mine for the thinning process when tanning and it works great.
I too have had it for around 20 years and am on my second blade.
A little small if thinning wolves and bear though.
A bench mount type would be better for the large hides.
Good investment.

i wouldn't use it to flesh a coyote, a two handed fleshing knife works way better for me (more control, less holes). it does work well for thinning the skin for tanning purposes. something the size of a deer cape will take a while to shave but will get the job done. i have used it to shave the skin on beavers and badgers and it works great for those!!

A couple of my trapper friends bought a electric flesher from a retired mink rancher. The unit very closely resembles a wood lathe. It has a 4 ft span between drive & support end, and uses changeable tapered fleshing poles to cover the various sizes of all of their catch. The machine operates like a lathe, where you control the depth of cut of the fleshing knife manually. Slick as ever, and fast(after a bit of initial practice on rabbits).

I've never even seen one, but when I was trapping I would have bought one had I been able to afford one.

Years ago a friend bought one, he loved it. He bought his from Halford's and I believe it was electric.

The thing that convinced me was this friend was well known for being one of the best and fastest beaver fleshers around. If he loved his machine, I figured it had to be fast and it had to do a pretty good job.
I couldn't see him selling a poorly done hide. That just isn't in his nature.
And I know he loves his down time. It had to be fast right from the get go or he'd go back to doing it old school.

This guy did a lot of beaver. up to 300 a year, or maybe a bit more.
Like me he learned to flesh them on his knee. We preferred that to other methods because all it required was a sharp knife and a pair of old jeans. Best of all it could be done anywhere, any time. Like while waiting for another beaver to surface while spring hunting for example.

Guys like him could flesh a beaver in under 15 minutes, it took me upwards of an hour.
For me a fleshing machine that could potentially put me in the same class as my friend, was something worth saving for.

But back then I was married to a woman who could keep "The Donald" in the poor house.
I never put together enough cash to make the purchase.
