Default Fenwick Aetos

Hey guys,

It’s me! I picked up a very nice fenwick Aetos 4wt from a seller this week for $100 and would like to get some suggestions on reel and line for dry flies only.

Budget would be around ~100; definitely not breaking the bank.

Any ideas??

Cortland fly lines https://www.cortlandline.com/collect...h-double-taper which are used by many. I have them from 2>7 weight in floaters.

It's a touch more than $100 but the Cheeky Preload reel is very nice. I haven't taken it on the water yet as I am working 13 hours a day, 7 days a week, right now. Backing, line, and a leader for $120, not sure how long the sale is good for.

It's not some fancy, high end, CNC machined reel, but it seems to have a very good drag, reels smooth, and the 3w version balance well on my 7'6" as well as the 8'6" that my dad has. I asked him to pick one up for me and he bought one for himself as well.

Great price for the rod! I had the 5wt. Solid rod for the money.
My suggestion would to be try a heavier 4wt or standard 5wt for the rod. I had to over line my 5wt fir a better casting and loading. Might not have to with the 4wt rod, but worth a try.

How would it fair against hobbs creek reels? They are preloaded as well.

I've been using two of the Hobbs Creek reels for the last 3 years. I use one with a 6wt floating line for stillwater and fall Forestry Trunk road fishing. I use the other with a 7wt sinking line for stillwater fishing. Both reels have worked well for me. I wouldn't hesitate to use the Hobbs Creek reels for any trout fishing.

I haven't had any experience with Cabelas pre-loaded line, but I'm sure they'd be fine to start with.

Great deal on the rod!

Ken

I also have the similar stuff but i use my 8wt hobbs for pike. I don’t know if I should go for the cheeky or just stick to hobbs for 3/4 reel for the price.

I could just wait for the seller to hook me up with his 3 tand reel that he was offering to sell to me in May.

Personally, for trout fishing I'd go with the cheaper reel and spend more on the fly line.

Between my Cabelas/Bass Pro reels and the Cheeky, I'll take the Cheeky every time. It's nothing fancy, but the drag is better and overall, everything about the reel is smoother.

At the end of the day, Haggis makes a fair point, it's only there to hold line. It doesn't need to be smooth or precise, or fancy. I just wanted something better than the house brand stuff after having a couple different models of them.

I have the Hobbs Creek 5/6 wt with the backing and 6 wf line supplied. Cabelas puts it on sale often. Right now its on for $59 i believe, regularly $79. It works ok except the drag backs off over time and ends up free wheeling which can be a pain if your not paying attention. So it needs adjusting periodically. But for the $59 I paid its satisfactory for me.
