Default New to fly fishing

Hi, I know nothing about fly fishing so I figured this year I'd give it a try, I got a fly fishing rod but I was wondering what type of flys should I get? I will be up around pincher creek in 3 weeks so any info would be great! Thanks

Research. There's no easy answer. I personally just bought a crap ton of flies and am just seeing what works!
Can also depend on what you're fishing for as well

Are you planning to fish rivers / streams, or lakes? Other's choice might vary, but I would include these 6:

Woolly Bugger.... black or olive, size 8-12
pheasant tail nymph... size 10-14
gold ribbed hare's ear size 10-14

Adams - 12 -16
elk hair caddis - 10 - 14
Stimulator - 10 - 14

my basic list would be adjusted, knowing where you want to fish. A guy could add another 6 common flies and be set for the summer.

Take a class from one of the Calgary shops. Or call the Crowsnest Angler and see if they have a class on when you are down that way. Another option is to join someone else from this forum for a day out.

Here is a list of some of the more "generic" type flies that are very common, its a good starting point, id add daves hopper to the list for fall time though.

Check out Icky Fly Works.
- He's a sponser of these forums (and if you check out the sponser forums you can find a discount on any order you make)
- Flies are typically under $1/ea.
- There are a number of pre-made fly selections he sells for various things (a bow river pack, an alpine streams pack, etc) which should give you a decent selection for whatever type of fishing you're looking to do

I always take a couple of days during the stampede and hit the Crowsnest, West Castle and half a dozen other small rivers down there. There's always something coming off and hatching but for the most part 70% of them are PMD's, big ones at that! Depending on the color of the water and even if there's none around by then a big Green Drake with a size 18 brassy or a PMD emerger 20" behind it will work miracles! Regardless stop by the Crowsnest flyshop they`ll help you out!!
