There is also the fact that Grande Prairie is among the largest urban areas in Alberta using RCMP contract policing. There are different policing issues in urban vs. rural areas: high transient population, concentration of drug distribution, large homeless population, youth gangs, etc. Places like Medicine Hat and Lethbridge are better comparables that have municipal police. Red Deer and Wood Buffalo are similar size, and I assume are watching the GP experiment closely.
