Which breed demands a premium at auction? I think it's black for a number of reasons.

It's the marketing again.

Its also the reason why most of us believe that Alberta beef is the best....

That's the barley that does that...

Best steak I ever had was at my wife’s cousins wedding in Calgary. Was an angus ribeye. I figured it had to do with it was a fancy catering job so they just used an expensive cut of meat. Sure wouldn’t mind having a freezer full of them though!!!

I can agree with this, you definitly know when you get into corn country. I think the breed has a lot of influence on marbling.

I remember reading a study on this years ago but can't the actual study but only a few rankings. Angus isn't the best tasting beef, it is just the easiest beef to taste the best. If all things being equal this is the adjusted common ranking:

Brahman
Gelbvieh
Limousin
Charolais
Hereford
Simmental
Angus
Red Angus

The issue with this ranking is that it is based on every every steer being a 900 marbling and a 900 Brahman is near impossible. They instead average around the mid 400s. An Angus on the other hand eveages around the 600s. Angus has a 25% higher marbling score but only have an equivalent ranking of about 4% higher when it comes to taste.

In short, Angus isn't the best beef available. It is the best beef we can produce consistently.

Butchered my pure Simmental steer on March 23. He was one year old to the day and dressed 722 lbs. Enough fat and will probably hang it 21 days.

Alberta beef is a good product. Is it the best?

When I am in the US I bring beef home that is finished on corn. It's a good product and I like it.

I've been in South America and had some excellent beef finished on grass.

Which one is the best? They are all good.

I've had 4-H beef (angus) and those T-Bones filled a plate

You must use tea saucers in place of plates. 😂

Taste is one thing and all of us have different taste likes but another question would be, which is best for you. Not sure if breed has anything to do with it but I am quite certain if its finished with corn/grain it certainly wouldn't be as good for you as pure grass fed/grass finished. Most corn has been genetically modified (especially feed corn). But grass fed and/or organic will cost more... And we are all going to die eventually so enjoy the cut/breed of your choice.
Hmmm, maybe a steak for supper tonight...

We butcher a Simmental every year. Best meat ever the way we feed ‘em.
It’s all about feed, how you handle them, and hang them.

I could bbq anyone up one and say it was angus and you would never know.

X2. Just picked up my simmental steer from the butchers last Friday. I haven’t had T bone steak this good in a long time.

All this talk of quality beef has me wanting to find some. If anyone knows a rancher in the Calgary area (within an hour +/- drive) that is selling good quality grass fed beef, I would be interested in purchasing some. Had a PM from a guy some time ago but it hasn't materialized so thought I would throw it out there.
Is it just me or has the quality of meat from Costco seem to go down lately. Had some chicken breasts from there a few weeks ago and it was the worst I have ever had. Super tough and no flavor, absolutely awful.

Correct, feed, age, marbling and animal husbandry are the big factors. Angus got popular due to the carcass size and consistency. Great beef though.

Why do you want grass fed? Barley fed or barley based pellets make for great beef.
