I think the tendency for people to look to government to fix there problems is the most concerning. Self reliance, along with coming together with your neighbours without the need for government is becoming a thing of the past.

Most boomers I know don’t smoke or drink. It’s the generation between the boomers and millennials that I find are the big partiers still. Guys and gals in their 40’s and early to mid 50’s. Also don’t think it’s a coincidence that this generation has the highest divorce rate.

Yes, some young people are overly entitled, but it's two sides of the same coin: the older generation are overly full of themselves. You demonstrate it nicely right here, the belief that you "earned your own" and that young people are just lazy.

In reality, you inherited a lot of wealth. When you were born, you were born into a relatively wealthy country. When you die, that same country will be relatively poor. Don't blame the young people, it's not they who sent all the money to China or borrowed all the debt or grew the massive socialist government, it was you.

They will be receiving a lot more than they paid for since they want to live forever. Modern medicine, at great expense, can keep them alive longer than ever, so that the pension cheques can keep coming in.

Nope, it's the younger generation that elects Socialist governments, why? Because they want something for nothing. I cannot believe how the young are OK with debt, both personal and the government level. I started with nothing, I am not well off by any stretch of the imagination, I live and accept the life I have because I made the choices I did. I don't begrudge or covet the wealth of those that did well.

Dumb young people don’t make me worry about the future. I know there is still a good possibility they get smarter with age and experience.

Now those that are over 30 dumb as a stump and can’t function in life are the ones that make me question the future

Right... sure you did. Would you like to tell your sob story to a poor person in Haiti or Niger? I wonder what's the difference between you and such a person. Is it you're an awesome genius? Or is it that you're just full of yourself and in reality you were born with privilege, in a relatively wealthy area of the world, probably to a good family, etc? I'm going to bet the latter -- certainly that's the case for the majority of you older folk.

There are 3 reasons I can think of that young people are taking on so much debt.

1) They have to, unless they're going to live in your basement for the next 20 years which you probably didn't give them the option to. You old folk turned housing into an "investment" and are proud that your children have to pay 3X higher for the same house than than you paid. You can't have it both ways: love your housing bubble and hate that your children are in debt.

2) They figure the amount of debt their parents generation took on is so high already, it's sure to be defaulted on and we'd might as well just keep borrowing as much as we can until everything unravels. Their parents set the wheels into motion on that one.

3) They are stupid. Which means their parents sucked, probably because they were too busy living selfishly for themselves and didn't bother educating their children.

In all cases, it's very hard to blame the young rather than the old. The old really ought to take more responsibility. Sadly, many of them have their heads stuck in their own butts thinking how amazing they are and how bad the young are, failing to perceive, understand, or acknowledge that things are very different nowadays than when they were 20 years old.

Do you enjoy stalking me around the forums?

Pikergolf insulted "the young people". I am part of that group, so I replied to his insult with what I hope is a dose of reality, but probably is something he won't be willing to consider because he's too convinced of his own greatness. I know many people of his generation who have very similar mindsets.

I'm only bitter because I see how the last 2 generations have squandered so much wealth and done so much to destroy the beautiful Western countries. Obviously this doesn't phase you, but it makes me want to weep studying history and then seeing what those people ended up being reduced to, specifically over the last 2 generations.

Okay. So you won't be taking any inheritance from your parents or other old folks. You plan to pay them back the cost of raising you and you are going to vote for a government that promises to run a balanced budget and pay back the 735 billion in debt the federal gov is sitting on while eliminating all carbon footprint from your life. If not how are u different than the preceding generations.

To finish off you commitment to doing it better u will not avail yourself of paid child care, Medicare, public schooling or any other program that is running up Gov deficits daily.

You can’t really blame them for being socialists when it’s all they’re taught about in government schools. I’d like to see them teach how free market capitalism prevents monopolies and allows more people to prosper.

I encourage all teachers who profess how good socialism is to take a wage cut to be in line with the rest of the country. Practice what they preach! Don’t group all teachers in the same boat though as not all are created equal.

I don’t believe individual teachers choose the curriculum? Kids should be taught the dangers of socialism, and how it’s been a massive failure everywhere

They would be required to teach about all the different types of governments. Positive or negative spin would be up to the individual teacher.

Kids will be kids, no matter the age.

Growing up and living a very important part of my life under a communist dictatorship, I can really understand the mirage of the socialist preachings taught in schools nowadays. It all sounds good and dandy until they realize the very next ones targeted for their “free” speech, “equality” aspirations and entitlement syndrome are them. And then they’ll wake up; some in a ‘ snap out of it’ moment, some like taking taking aspirin for cancer. In the end though, every and each of them socialist - fascist endorsers will turn around. Unfortunately it comes at a big cost for themselves and the ones around them.

It’s up to the rest of us though to take the time AGAIN and make them see that the pass they’re on is going in the wrong direction. Everybody is bound to make mistakes and fail at some point in life, but we all found our way eventually.

I’m afraid we’re living interesting times, not only in Canada, but as a global trend. We might have to go through what me and many others have went through before, but in the end, we’ll all appreciate the effort and sacrifice we’ll need to make.

Deja vu?

I probably won't be getting any inheritance as my parents are very wasteful.

I voted for the People's Party. I have no desire to eliminate carbon footprint.

In many ways. I reject the Christian ideology that all humans are equal or, generally, that weakness is a strength. I reject the nihilistic, hedonistic way of living that most modern humans are engaged in.

I'm in favor of abolishing those services, but as long as they exist and I'm forced to pay for them I will use them.

Socialism is idiocy, but so is free market capitalism. Both are paths towards power and wealth accumulating in a small number of hands, which will eventually take over and impose a totalitarian system. Both only "work" in a theoretical world where human "vices" are non-existent, ie. not in reality.

O, please educate me on how free market capitalism leads to totalitarianism and monopolies...

I remember a story about Franz Liszt, the composer.
At the time he was popular (1850's) his music appealed to the younger crowd.
He was considered the 'bad boy' of his time.
Many concert halls wouldn't book him because his followers tended to leave the concert halls in a shambles...would rip the fabric of the seating and tear down the sound deadening curtains.
It's what youth does

False, in a truly free market wealth is transferred from one business to another due to competition. Monopolies are created due to regulation from the government. As for the people taking over government, this is unlikely in the event that wealth continues to change hands, and government has little impact on the market. If you look at the last 200 years, companies cornering a market for several years was relatively unheard of until the government started introducing regulation. Which is why its profitable for a business to be involved in politics, to gain influence over politicians. Smaller government, less influence, less corporate interference, which in turn allows small business to prosper and accumulate wealth.
