Give the Lomond Hotel a call 1-403-792-3606. They might be able to hold onto some tickets. If not let me know

Im pretty sure that my buddy is wrong, but he was saying they just last min cancelled the tourny. I think he is wrong as i called the Lomond hotel and the day before and they still had tickets. so i would have thought he might mention someting.

Was out saturday and went to get some tickets for a buddy and they only had 2 left and i took one. Was looking at the forecast for the next two weeks and its supposed to be pretty warm. The boat launch was already starting to get a bit sketchy. i am wondering if they are going to cancel it because of that. I would say if the forecast is right the tourney will be cancelled.

Is there some where one can check if this derby is cancelled, I am driving down from Edmonton and sure do not want to incur the cost if it is fact going to be cancelled.

Just a little info regarding the derby. Also, zero chance the ice is 2.5 feet thick....

http://www.vulcanadvocate.com/2015/0...by-going-ahead

Quote:
The 27th annual Badger Lake Ice Fishing Derby is going ahead as planned on Feb. 28 and March 1.

Despite this winter’s unseasonably warm weather, the ice was still about 2.5 feet thick as of mid-February when the Advocate spoke with organizer Sandy Kam.

“We’ve been keeping an eye on the ice,” she said.

Participants in this year’s ice fishing derby should have no problem walking out on the ice to set up fishing tents and shacks, but they are encouraged not to drive out onto the lake, said Kam.

“They take their vehicles on the ice at their own risk,” she said.

But there’s plenty of room along the lake’s banks to park, added Kam.

The ice fishing derby has only been cancelled once that she knew of, back in 2012 when a warm winter created ideal conditions for about half a dozen trucks to break through the ice.

The tickets for this year’s event – there were 300 – are all sold out, said Kam.

The number of tickets available had to be brought down this year in order to allow for bait to be used, she said, citing regulations about using bait for such an event.

Visit www.badgerlakeicefishingderby.com for a list of the derby’s rules.

There are cash prizes for the top-five largest fishes caught. The top prize for the largest catch is $1,500, followed by $700, $500, $300 and $200, said Kam.

There are also draws for prizes such as ice augers, underwater viewing systems and ice fishing tents, she said.

The Lomond Lions Club provides some assistance for the event by preparing food for participants.

Recently, two Calgary men planned to go ice fishing on Lake McGregor, but the truck they were in went crashing through the ice, leaving its passenger side tires submerged. They escaped without injury but called 911, prompting emergency responders, including Milo firefighters, Vulcan RCMP and medical personnel, to attend the scene. AFAB Mechanical and Towing was called in to remove the vehicle from the ice.

Organizers with the Badger Lake Ice Fishing Derby committee will continue to monitor the conditions of the ice, said Kam.

With regards to 2012 the following statement is false
"The ice fishing derby has only been cancelled once that she knew of, back in 2012 when a warm winter created ideal conditions for about half a dozen trucks to break through the ice. "

2012 was the year of the blizzard. People couldn't see 5ft infront of themselves and were unfortunately driving into the breakers.

And the ice on the weekend was great. Had 28". My friend's 6yr old caught an 11.5 pike!

Here's hoping it IS as warm as it was in 2010 when we were in overalls an a t-shirt in lawn chairs! Sure, we may be pushin a lil slush around on the surface during the day, but that jus makes for better foot traction :P

Weather report is calling for -10 an -12 at night

Was there yesterday and 19 inches where we were sitting and the top top 2 a bit on the white side. Lots of creaking all day and some nasty jump out the tent ones too. Supposed to cool off after tomorrow so should be good on the weekend. Maybe lose and inch or so today and tomorrow but may gain it back.

Default Badger Derby

2012 Unfortunately people were driving into the ice breakers long before the snow and wind hit. Managed to stop a van from driving directly into the big one running North and south or it would have been a recovery mission not a rescue. Had to point them in the direction of the North shore so they could get off the ice. F&W had to pull out a truck and a quad with the help of the fishing party on the opposite side of the breaker from where we were and these breakers were piled up 6-8 feet high in 2 mile visibility.

I recall blizzard like conditions with very little visibility on saturday, I didn't bother to return on Sunday. I don't recall much visibility but wasn't there on Friday ! When the quad went through, you couldn't see squat, never mind 2 miles away !

Friday and early Saturday were fine until the wind hit and that's when there were navigational errors, derby was cancelled that afternoon when the motorhome dropped through the ice. F&W may have played a part in the cancellation. Can't blame them with the lack of common sense that was going on.

Yesterday (SE corner) there was 22" of good ice. Lots of vehicles on ice in NW corner, but didn't go there.

This better be B'S. I went to the a weight station with one that was 9.6 on my scale and he wouldn't even weight it because he said it was under 10 pounds. He said if it wasn't 15 lbs don't bring it to weigh station. There were lots of 11 ,12 lbs brought in he said. Hummmmmmm

These guys got to remember there is only 300 lines in water not 1000 this year.
